low tire pressure light ...for the spare tire??????

That is until you buy your next set of tires. Then to keep them matching you'll have to buy all five.

Rotating all 5 tires is ONE way of rotating tires...but not the only way. In fact on MOST cars it's impossible because MOST cars don't have a full size spare. I only rotate 4 tires (front to back). I've never ever added the spare into the tire rotation....and NEVER will.

why wouldnt you? if it already matches, why not use it?
that way they all have the same amount of wear. and you'll always know the spare is up to pressure.

i agree, OBVIOUSLY you cant rotate the spare in, if it doesnt match. even bringing that up was silly.

Because it doesn't buy you anything. You MIGHT be able to get an extra 2000 miles out of your tires. Now instead of buying 4 new tires you'll have to buy 5 new tires.

that spare that you never use WILL have to get replaced eventually. it will rot just sitting under there.
also, as a pressure vessel, it has a life span, and JUST holding air for too long will make it UNSAFE to use.
So if I just sold my wheels without having the sensors swapped to the new wheels I screwed up huh?

you can buy new sensors for the new wheels.

Yup...Eventually...but if you do the math..it'll be cheaper in the long run to just rotate 4.

I recently noticed my low pressure light was on at a gas station and found I had gotten a flat tire. I then had it repaired. Since then my low pressure light has not gone off. I've double checked the pressure on all the tires and they're all at the factory suggested 32psi. I was thinking the sensor in the flat tire was damaged or needed to be reset. Any suggestions before I take it into the dealership?

I hope whom ever repaired you tire did not damage the TPMS sensor. I always remind the shop mechanic that there are sensors in the wheels.
Take it back to garage that may of damaged it. Those things aren't cheap...

I like the TPMS system mostly for others. I know this is old school, but remember the days when you checked tire pressure along with fluids on a regular basis? I also have issue with all this crap mandatory on vehicles now only to jack prices up and an attempt to make vehicles idiot proof.

Have you looked at the idiots that are driving cars these days. I pass at least 20 brain dead texting while driving in heavy traffic.

I agree completely with out. What is so hard about checking the tire pressure. In fact I still check the pressure even though I have the sensors. Why wait until the light goes on. I recently read an article about I think it was GM vehicles. That when you add air to the tires...the light will flash when you reached the recommended pressure. Not too sure how it will work if you change tire sizes though.

How do the sensors work? Is it built into the rim or valve stem? I just got aftermarket wheels and I'm wondering how it will affect the system...

The Sensors are all one unit built into the valve stem, there are two types Toyota use a 20 degree unit for Aluminum Rims and a 30 degree for steel rims. The TPMS are programmed with a unique FCC ID that needs to be registered with the TPMS module, meaning if a sensor is replaced or damaged the new one must be reprogrammed into the system, currently this can only be done with Aftermarket Scantools equipped with TPMS Packages and a Factory Scantool.

The V8 4Runner manual states to rotate all 5 tires as the All-Time 4WD system does not take kindly to having different tires, in fact it is also stated that all 5 tires should match within a certain diameter (though I'm not exactly sure how a quarter of an inch, would make that big a difference.) The rotation pattern is supposed to be so that if you need to use your spare you can swap it in and drive on it without having to worry about it damaging the central differential. (According to literature, like I said I don't see how 32's of an inch affect the central differential that much. BUT members like me who are running 33" tires and have a stock spare would have some issues.)

I agree with both of you, its a reflection of the lack of responsibility in today's society. People get hurt they blame others for their incompetence and those of us who can actually think for ourselves end up paying the price. You would not believe the number of people who don't even know where a dipstick is let alone why the tire light is on when their big fancy 7" Nav/Infotainment screen is telling them EXACTLY which tire is low.

Hack to check spare air pressure

Why doesn't someone make (invent) a hose that screws onto the valve stem on the spare tire, like the old bicycle pumps had, then attach that to a hose back to the trailer hitch, and fasten it on the side out of the way as not to get damaged with a valve stem on the end with a cap like your tire, then all you would have to do is check it every month or so no need to crank to spare down

Just a thought

Sound like you just did invent it, all you have to do now is make it, all inventions start with an idea.

That being said, I never lower my tire to check the pressure or add air, I have a angled air gauge and also a angled tire inflator, here are links to ones similar to what I use, it does require me to lay on the ground to do so but I only have to do once a year usually when it get cold out.

Checked all four drive tires and they were fine.

I pulled down the spare and it had 44 pounds in it. Lowered pressure to recommended and light still on.

That leads me to think one of my sensors is bad. I will take it by the tire and have checked. Never owned a truck with this problem but I will figure it out.
