Lower Ball Joint Replacement, Dust Covers

I am replacing my LBJ's in my '98 soon and am going with the black bolts. I figured I might as well add the dust cover to keep the threads from getting to close to my CV joint boots.

It took me a while to find the right part number for the dust covers. Figured I'd throw them in an easy to search for thread.

Part # 43346-60011

I use the black LBJ bolts without the boots and haven't had any issues.

Those are just dust covers. All the early years never had those covers. My guess is they started doing it to help prolong the life of the ball joint.

I'm not really that surprised to hear it but I figured for $25 it's worth it.

That's my understanding of why they did it. I figure if Toyota engineers thought it was a good idea I might as well give it a go. My '98 did not come with them, I think they added them in 2000 or 2001.

I'm curious if there is any issue with "mid-travel" setups. (Longer than stock) Would be good to know in case it needs to be modified

They are just flexible rubber. I can't see those covers effecting anything.

I think there are several write ups and even videos available. The only change is the Spiker Engineering tests for the best bolts to use. The search function in the 3rd gen sticky will help you find these threads..

These are the parts I ordered for my 98.

Passenger Side LBJ - 43330-39585
Drivers Side LBJ - 43340-39465
LBJ Bolts - 90119-10933
LBJ Dust Covers - 43346-60011

Hopefully someone can verify the LBJs are the same in a 98 as they are in an 02, I believe they are but don't want to steer you wrong.

Nope they are just a rubber shield. As they are on 1st gen late model tocuma too.

These are the parts I ordered for my 98.

Passenger Side LBJ - 43330-39585
Drivers Side LBJ - 43340-39465
LBJ Bolts - 90105-10505
LBJ Dust Covers - 43346-60011

In your first post you said you'll use the black bolts, which is a good choice in any case, and especially if you are using the dust covers.

But 90105-10505 are red bolts, not black. They will be too short with the dust covers, and besides, they are not as good as the black bolts, which are 90119-10933.

Well crap. I'll have to send them back and re-order, I haven't gotten around to even opening up the package yet as life has gotten hectic.

I'll update the part number above though so I don't mess anyone else up.

You are correct.. I think the Engineers realized the Lower ball joints setup had issues.. So their patch was to put a secondary cover over the the lower ball joint to keep dirt and water out of the joint for a longer period of time. Thus how the boots showed up in the later years.
