Lower Ball Joint...wtf Toyota?

Putting on Bilsteins yesterday. Install went fine, took longer than I thought, but got it done. Unfortunately tore the driver's side lower ball joint boot a little and grease was coming out. No big deal I thought, just call the dealership parts counter and get a new ball joint. Two different dealer parts counters tell me the ball joint is not a replaceable item, you have to replace the entire lower control arm as it is now one unit! Can anyone confirm this? Is there an aftermarket one I can buy? The ball joint has a bolt and castle nut. Why would it have that if it's not replaceable? This is like your spark plug wearing out and being told you need a new engine, absolutely stupid

Call a different dealer. The LBJ on the on the 5th gens bolt on. Now the LC 100 is a different story. The LBJ is part of the LCA.

^^^^Nope.

Really? I called two dealers and both said the same thing. Aso, I looked at the parts manual just a while ago and the control arm is shown as one unit with the ball joint. This sucks. I was trying to save some money and put on my own lift, which I have done in the past and I end up creating a big headache.:redbrick:

Nevermind. I'm an idiot (as usual). I see your diagram has an inset for KDSS. Since I just tore the boot, can I just replace that? Excuse all my post and replys to myself!!

Your not an idiot! I would be babbling and pizzed off too.

If you can find the boot I'm pretty sure it's an easy fix (unless it's somehow permanently crimped on...). [edit- I see on the diagram it's held on with a dust cover set ring so try to find the boot!]
I did a quick google search and couldn't find any repair boots though.

Where's Harper7? I'm sure he knows for sure.

I can't find any either after some furious work on The Googler! The dealer will probably just keep saying I have to replace the entire control arm. I will ask them why the parts diagram shows a seperate part for the dust cover and set ring though. Thanks for sending that my way. This forum is so awesome!

I can't seem to find the part number either but if it's any reassurance to you, I did look at the factory service manual right now and in there it says the boot is replaceable, so I'm assuming there's got to be a replacement boot out there somewhere, good luck!

Wow it does look like it is part of the LCA. That sucks. I was thinking about the part that bolts to the knuckle.

Eddiebx, is that from the 5th gen factory service manual? On second look that control arm looks different. The ball joint is on the top. On the 5th gens the ball joint is on the bottom. Unless that diagram is of the control arm removed and flipped upside down.

The ball joints in my old Durango were the same way (whole arm from the dealer deal). My good local guy did his thing, removed the old one, and installed the Moog ones. Something about drilling out the rivet, it was a while back, sorry. Curious if that is an option for these?

Quick temp fix

Shrink wrap & zip ties work great as a temporary fix for ball joints and CV boots. I fixed a rear CV boot on a BMW this way and it lasted for years.

I know you trying to get help to your problem and not knowing if this mod is going to cost you a lot out of pocket to repair sucks... but... Could you please explain how this happened? Where you use the fork type ball joint tool? Or the two hammer trick? Or the pitman puller?

I am planing on doing a lift next week and I have never done one before and I am trying to learn as much as I can to avoid breaking anything.

Thanks
