You'd have to buy complete arms. They are absolutely expensive from Toyota though. I got some cheap eBay shit and they seem to do the job

I went the eBay route too. Both arms for like 150 bucks or something. They seem to be holding up pretty well to the abuse I put this rig through.

If they are not too rustred you can easily rebuild them with new bushings and ball joints. Save yourself maybe $150 each arm. I got OEM bushings and Moog ball joints.

Seems it CAN be done

I struggled with the same issue a couple of years ago. I searched high and low for a way to rebuild the arms myself. In my research, I found some DIYers out here and on Toyota120 who successfully removed and replaced with some MOOG joints. I bought the ball joints and the bushings to do a rebuild and when I went to try and remove the ball joint, found it was WAY too corroded and seized to move. The ball joint kit I got from Autozone began to over stress, despite the amount of Break Free and heat I applied. Ultimately, I said screw it and bought new OEM.

If you want to give it a shot, here's a couple of links I found to help get you started:

And here's the MOOGs:

Good luck!

I have an 04 T4R V8 AWD and was looking at replacing the lower ball joints and the dealer is telling me I can’t do the lowers without doing lower control arms....?!! Are they pulling my leg or does the 04 not come serviceable?

Toyota does not sell OEM ball joints separately in the states, they were telling the truth. Only way to get oem is pony up for OEM LCA's

I searched extensively and so did montijo505 when we rebuilt our LCAs. Pretty much have to buy the LCAs as assemblies only, in the US. Theres a loophole someone on TacomaWorld found to get Tacoma ball joints imported to the US, but they have a different taper than 4runner LBJs and aren't compatible. Heres the link to the TacomaWorld post if you'd like to check it out: Aftermarket lower control arms - which one is better? | Page 2 | Tacoma World. Montijo505, a few others, and I went and submitted a request to get the 4runner ball joints on Amayama (the site used to by the tacoma guy to import), but they were unsuccessful at finding anything for us, see his post here: 4th gen LBJ part #.

I've heard good things about Sankei 555 LBJs, I used Import Directs on a recommendation from someone on another forum, and also heard decent things about the Moog greasable LBJs.

edit: Looks like Montijo505 sneaked in here first lol.

Wow I totally thought he was pulling my leg. They looked pressed in to me so I thought it was replaceable. I guess I’ll start doing my research. Thanks for the info guys!!

They are pressed in and can be replaced, the Toyota LBJs just aren't available a la carte. I find it odd they sell the LCA bushings a la carte, but not the ball joints, since a consumer or shop would be more likely to replace the LBJs.

I have a thread on LCA rebuild that goes over the LBJ replacement if you want to see some pictures. Whiteline Lower Control Arm Bushing Tutorial (120+ Pictures)
