I replaced my boots about 2 years ago with Febest parts after I pinched both when using a pry bar on the LCA to get the strut in. Now I just break the LCA bolts loose, so much easier.
Anyway, recent inspection showed a bunch of grease around the base of one of them so I ordered a new boot and took it apart. See pics for what I found
The boot is stuck up and if you push it around you can see the shaft.
The next pic shows the difference new and old. And one of the failed boot.
The small section got stuck on the ridge and came apart. Not sure why.
Takes about an hour to do the whole thing, maybe less if you memorize the torque specs. Take off the wheel and it's three bolts.
