Lower Control Arm Failure???

Anyone ever seen a lower control arm failure like this? I didn't find anything with the search. Just wanting to make sure its not common so I'm OK replacing with OEM.

That is pretty wild. Ive only seen a LCA fail like that from being in an accident. Otherwise its always the lower ball joint.
 
holy shit sticks! Your LBJ's look really nice actually, so hopefully they're still in good shape after you replace that LCA. Eep. Good luck, friend!
 
I was running a really rough trail and keeping up with RZR 1Ks. I'm sure I was hitting on the bumpstops quite a bit and getting the front end into the air on occasion as well. So I guess no one really makes a HD aftermarket version?

I will say that I had to replace this arm before (my rig hit a curb before I bought it) and I went with an aftermarket. Definitely getting OEM Toyota this time around. The other side has no issues at all and I have to assume this aftermarket arm just wasn't built as well.
 
What were you doing when this happened? It looks like a hard suspension impact could have caused the tear in the metal since it's on the side the shock mounts to. Were you doing some Dukes of Hazard style jumping?

I thought at first the control arm could have been weakened by rust but it doesn't look like that's the case from the pictures.

Edit: You must have been typing while I was. Now it makes sense. Aftermarket control arms and hard wheeling don't mix well I reckon.

Mine took a 40mph impact into a concrete culvert without even bending. These were 183k Toyota factory LCAs. The impact was so hard it bent and swayed the frame.

I was juuuuuust about to install aftermarket LCAs on my replacement rig... no longer the case.

This is nuts, I have never seen anything like this on an OEM arm. Ive seen them bent but never completely broken like that. Im sure it was due to being a n aftermarket arm.
 
The real question here is what kind of lower ball joint is that!? Haha Because that's impressive!

That's insane. Out of curiosity, what notch are you at on the 5100's? Stock rubber bumps?

My advice is make sure you're at or below 2 notches, swap out rubber bumps for some air bumps, and get OEM LCA's.

Total Chaos does make boxed LCAs FWIW. Though, they are extended width, and may not be available separately.

Even at the highest notch I don't see that causing this failure.

It's set at whatever Toytec has it at which from their site is the lowest perch. I'm running stock bumps, and I haven't extended them any. Air bumps are definitely not in budget. A replacement OEM (junkyard) LCA is in the works. FWIW, I was out stress testing it. I'm planning to avoid getting airborne in the future :eyebrows:
 
Does the OEM LCA have a "TOYOTA" stamp? If not, how do we identify if a used LCA is OEM or aftermarket?


will the 1999-2006 Tundra LCAs fit a 1996-2002 4Runner?

Well running a rough trail at speeds that no oem vehicle was designed to run with a long travel 80 mph utv will definitely cause something to break. I've seen long travel pre runner trucks break trying to keep up with high power sport utvs.
