You should be fine. The splines on that shaft are normally exposed.

I just had mine replaced by a Toyota dealer and can confirm the splines are exposed like that.

However, if that yoke is any indication of what the joint looks like (it probably is), I'd expect to be replacing it in the near future. The joint will become frozen and will only move in one direction causing a binding of the wheel and what feels like the loss of power steering.

I do all of my own work on my truck and that job was one I gladly paid to make someone else's headache!

That's normal. That extra exposed spline length is for removing the shaft. The yoke gets slid up the spline so the upper part of the shaft can be swung free.

I had the shaft replaced today because of the reasons mentioned above
And it now drives like new..

I had a clunking sound coming from my steering column at low speeds over bumps. Removing the slack in the lower intermediate shaft by loosing the part that clamps onto the shaft and sliding it about 10mm towards the steering wheels. Then I retightened it and no more clunking!
