LSD explanation

Ive looked around the forum and Google but am still a bit confused about LSD and LSD OFF function. It stops a wheel from free wheeling if said wheel is off ground and transfers the power to the wheel still in contact with ground? I saw on here somewhere that it may be a good idea to turn it off while off-road? Im just curious and trying to learn some more about my truck so any help would be appreciated.

Is yours 2WD or 4WD? ONLY the 2WD version of the 4R has the LSD. If you are thinking of 'offroading', chances are then that you are 4WD and therefore this does not apply to you.
 
Its 2WD and when I say offroading Im just talking fire roads, Forestry roads to camp and stuff. Nothing too hairy, some ruts, washboards and stuff but not stuff that I wouldnt be comfortable navigating with 2WD. I saw somewhere on here someone mentioning that if you do find yourself in a jam or potential jam turning off LSD may be a good idea. Looking for basic info.

I'd think it would be the other way around. If LSD is turned off, then you'll get into the situation where only one wheel (the one without any traction) will spin. With LSD, if one of your two drive wheels starts to spin, then some power will be transferred to the wheel with traction. Maybe they meant keeping LSD turned off until you get into a jam?
 
I got this from the fjcruiserforums I used to frequent a lot...

The AUTO LSD applies brake hydraulic pressure to a slipping wheel to reduce the difference in rotation speed between the left and right drive wheels. This causes driving torque to be transmitted to the wheel opposite the slipping wheel.

2wd models have Auto LSD instead of ATRAC.

Automatic Limited Slip Differential uses the traction control system (TRAC) to control engine performance AND braking when one of the rear wheels begins to spin (or slip).

This gives added traction to the vehicle.

Auto LSD has it's own button, found in the upper left hand corner of the buttons (found in 2wd models only).

Apparrently it must be engaged with the push of the "auto LSD" button when you're on a slippery surface (snow, ice, or lots o' water).

This is the 2wd's version of ATRAC found on 4wd models.
 
In a standard differential with no traction control devices, when a tire is off the ground or loses traction, that tire will spin freely while the tire on the ground or the one with traction will be static with no power applied to it. In a limited slip diff, the tire on the ground or with traction will get "some" power applied to it, even while the other one is freely spinning. I tried to explain it in basic form, do a search for detailed explanations and how the clutches in the LSD work.

The LSD described above is not really a LSD, using the brakes on the free spinning wheel is a round about way to mimick a Limited slip differential.

Does the 2 wheel drive have an LSD or just the braking and engine control system?

I used to do a lot of acid when I was younger.

:thumb3: I think I remember that acid thing, I think, but, I also had a young lady who was trying to catch me YEARS ago, said she wanted to give me some LSD, Love, Sex, and Devotion. At that time, I wasn't too keen on Love, and Devotion, but the rest was fine....:girl:
