LSD in the front?

I can't sleep and was just pondering, since an 'Aussie locker' in the front is not a good idea, do to my driving on snow / ice many times a year, i'm still thinking some traction aid in the front would be a decent idea (since i still haven't installed my Aussie in the back either (my god am i getting lazy!))

Would a true-trac in the front be a decent option? i see lots of write ups asking this since it's NOT an auto-locker like the Aussie is, instead the True-Trac (LSD) allows slip right? and the model for a 2000 4runner SR5 V6 Auto trans is: TrueTrac 911A644 ? right??

any experience is greatly appreciated guys! thank you?

Waste of money.

A TrueTrac or any other LSD is always working to limit the rotational differences between the axles, even when you're not in 4WD. It will cause understeer on slippy surfaces (ice, snow, sand, mud) just like an auto locker, but when you get in the rocks and unload a tire it doesn't work well enough to push power to the loaded tire the way a real locker will. I bought a TrueTrac for the front of my '86, and it was the worst $450 I ever spent on that truck.

If you want front traction for wheeling, you want a selectable. If you want front traction for icy/snowy pavement, you want better tires.

huh.... well i've read over some threads that they liked them in all conditions except rocks "getting a wheel in the air is where the truetrac failed" selectable lockers 1k$ per axle is way more than i'm willing to spend to just get the front better traction, then all the problems that comes with an ARB....

think i'll just put the Aussie in the back and call it good, until i start getting stuck more often...

thanks for your i perspective, i appreciate your input good sir!

You gotta remember that guys are emotionally invested in their trucks. It's a fact, we are. We want our trucks to be awesome, we spent the money on the LSD and want it to be awesome, we're gonna post threads about how awesome it is. When the honeymoon is over and the LSD starts farting in bed and leaving dirty dishes in the sink, we STFU and post about something else. Look at guys' reports on the TrueTrac through that filter and see what you can weed out. Remember that not everybody sees a lot of icy roads or muddy trails. Remember that when you pop a wheel in the air is exactly when you need that front locker the most.

I think you've got a good plan. The Aussie is a great locker and you'll love it. If/when you're ready for more down the road, get the ARB or a solid axle with elocker and do it once and do it right.

What would Timothy Leary do?

More doses, that's what Tim would do.
