So I don't remember if this has been touched on before; I'm sure it has been, I figure this could be used a reference thread that'll show up in search easily for those of you who are curious... or remember to search. LoL

Was looking over a FJ Cruiser today and it had the TRD tire recall done on it (we don't get a lot of TRD wheel'd FJ's so I didn't remember this) and I realized that since the TRD wheels run LT 265/70R16's Toyota updated the TPMS and Tire & Load Rating sticker on the driver's door frame. Point being, Toyota wants the tires at 46psi.

The TSB applies to Tacomas and 4Runners also, so I figure this could be used as a "baseline" tire pressure for people swapping up to LT Tires, since its a Toyota specification.

That is all, and remember as always... kill Hitler. (Still offering internet cookies for person who gets the reference! :) )

Would be interesting to know what psi Toyota would choose absent the new regulatory environment regarding tire pressure. On its face, the 46psi appears to be a straight transfer of capacity per psi of the P-metric to the LT tire.

Boy, if there were lots of threads about disabling tpms before.....

Doubtful anyone has promoted higher pressure for LTs more than I, but I wouldn't like the re-calibrated level at all, especially if the trigger point represented the same percentage psi decrease as in the P-metric. That would put the trigger point somewhere above 40psi. Any idea where it is?

I did not play with the pressure to see when the trigger trips... the customer had roughly 41psi in his tires at the time of service and the TPMS light did not trip, so I don't know if it was on the edge or not. The campaign has us installing an updated TPMS module for these vehicles so I assume they have new tolerances.

I personally was running 36 psi in my tires (LT 285/70R17) for a long time, decided after this to pump them up to 46psi, I haven't really noticed much difference yet to be honest.

Nothing wrong with 46, but if your aim was to use the same philosophy used in the new 46psi spec, it would take about 38psi in LT285/70/17 to the match the load reserve of P265/70/17 at 32psi.

Yeah, but I set my 4Runners tires to 36psi when they were P rated tires. I found that to be the best for my vehicle in terms of good contact and decent fuel mileage gain. So I'll just try out 46psi and see how it is.
 
Going 10lbs OVER the recommended limit will give you less traction and uneven tread wear.

2-3lbs over is fine. But NOT 10lbs over.

The recommended tire pressure on my 4runner is 32. I usually set it around 35.

Recommended tire pressure is a function of weight of vehicle and usable footprint of the tire. It can be easily mathematically computed.
 
I am a big fan of the chalk test when setting tire pressure. It is a quick easy method that gives you a good ball park of what PSI your tires should have based on your specific vehicle.

I agree, but these are not passenger tires we're talking about, hence why they need a lil more air.

I did the same method and came up with about 45psi per tire that I run in my LT285/70/17's

Thanks to the OP for sharing this info. I've been wondering what Toyota would do regarding LT pressures. I just got Revo 2s in LT265/70R17 put on today and the guys at Firestone put the tires at 32psi. After reading volumes of JB's work (thanks dude!) over the past couple of weeks I was pretty sure that wasn't right. I even asked the guy, "shouldn't these have a higher pressure than the stock Ps?". He assured me it'd be fine but he was dodgy and I could totally tell that he just wanted to go home. Not a huge deal, I can air them up in the morning but damn; $1000 for this mother trucker to lie to my face? Anyway...
I was going to start with JB's oft-suggested 12 psi over stock P and its good to know the ballpark in which Toyota's LT psi recommendation resides.

Right, but that's for the stock, P-metric tire. As I've learned (I think) from nerding out on the forum, a LT tire requires more psi to match the load capacity of a P-metric tire of the same size.

I think the Firestone guys should've known this. They did know it because I brought it up, but it was 4:30 Friday afternoon and they wanted to split.
Oh and I forgot to ask in my original reply: What about the TPMS now that I've switched to an LT? Can a dealer reprogram it to reflect my new psi needs? It was very consistent with the stock tires; 28psi and under triggered the light every time. I'd hate to lose it.

Yes they can( dealer).

You will have to go in and it takes about an hour to do, unless you have the numbers on each of your sensors in the tires. You need all 5 of them. They will need these numbers to program into the tpms.

If not sit back and wait for them to break down your tires to get the numbers. And the tpms can only recieve 5 numbers only. I have a 2nd set of rims for my off road tires, have to look at a idiot light will I have these on.

I noticed the same thing from my Firestone guys. They were nice and did good work, but they didn't want to get into the psi inference between LT vs P. I chalked my tread and edges this week and I settled on 3bar based on the 'c' load rating on my truck.

You can program the sensors, but changing the parameters is something Toyota won't let you do even with a Factory Scantool such as the TIS TechStream.
 
I guess i was told falslely by the dealers mechanic here in sac, when my previous o4 had a bad tpms and they had to replace.

I guess I will just have to talk to my Asian brother and have him talk to one of his buddies and getter done. There's always a way to get around things.
