Lug nut stuck

I was trying to change out my brake pads this weekend and as I was loosening my lug nuts I noticed that one lug nut would get tighter after loosening it. I no idea of how or why it is doing that. If someone has any input it would be greatly appreciated.

Just a guess, but I suspect an idiot, an impact gun, and cross-threading may have something to do with it. Who was the last to mess with that wheel? If the answer is Pep Boys--case closed.

How far were you able to back it off? Can you see/get to the threaded stud?

(As I hand torque my lugs and do all my own work, I have never had to deal with this. Hopefully someone has.)

It can't hurt to retighten, and then loosen again a few times. With a little luck, it may find its way off.

Keep twisting. Try putting a jack under one side of your four-way and standing on the other.

With any luck you've just got a bit a debris in there and it'll chew it up and come off clean. If you're not lucky, it's crossthreaded and will torque the stud off, in which case you'll need to replace the stud. If you're really not lucky, you'll strip the threads and leave the nut spinning free and still on there, but there's only one way to find out.
 
its probably just a cross threaded lug, try gently going back and forth with it, and using some penetrating oil you might get lucky, if not...
 
get some liquid nitrogen and blast the lug nut, then hit it with a chisel, it should split and your g2g

-wheel locks to mean chit to me
 
its very unlikely that it was actually cross threaded. it's all but impossible to cross thread it, AND get it all the way on. plus, its a fairly course thread, very hard to get started crossed up.

but, more likely the threads were somehow damaged, either from being over tightened, or something banged the threads the last time the nut was off.

in the end, it doesn't matter, its damaged, and needs to be removed.
twist it until the stud breaks, get the rotor off, and replace the stud, and get a new nut.

I wouldnt say that. Someone who doesnt know what theyre doing with a impact gun could easily get it on and cross thread it
 
I recently had this on two of my lug nuts on the same wheel. I do all of my own work and torque to sepc after a rotation or inspection. I don't know what caused it but I'm glad I caught it at home and not on the road.

My 3/4 IR ti impact gun wouldn't budge the stuck nut. By hand my lug wrench loosended the nut a turn or two before it got stuck. It took a long 3/4" breaker bar to break the stud in order to remove the wheel.

Once the wheel is removed all it takes is a medium whack to the broken stud to remove it. Go to the dealer and buy a few new studs and lugs nuts.

certainly just slapping it on there with the gun could get it cross threaded. but, all the way tight?

have you ever worked with a cross threaded bolt?

oh, you wont need to replace the rotor, just remove it so you can change the stud.

Yeah, when i first got my truck both rear wheels had 2 cross threaded nuts, all the way tight. Had to break them off and replace the stud.

Which is what the OP will have to do.

Just got new studs and lug nuts. Going to try and do it again this weekend. Hope it's not to difficult to replace.

Does anyone know of any good write ups or tips I should know before trying to tackle this project?

Thanks a lot!! And thank you to everyone for the feed back. Saved me a few dollars than to taken it to a shop and getting it done.
