lug nut stud

Ok so I went to get new tires on my 4runner today and they broke off a lug nut stud. Now I was pretty pissed off about the whole thing but I can't blame the place because I have broke off three myself. Now before everyone jumps to conclusions, yes they were using a torque wrench. The first two for me, I was not using a torque wrench but the third I did purchase a torque wrench just for that purpose, but it still broke off. So how many off you have run into this problem? I think the steel in the lug nut studs is bad and toyota will not own up to it. oh ya, the part of the stud that broke off still spins in the lug nut so it didn't get jamed and then broke off. Basically the metal is weak, so how many people have this problem too? My 4runner is an '03. Would like to hear your opinions.

Once the lugs are over-torqued they are stressed. After that they can break, at any point. The other problem could be the metal itself. If the steel is not molecularly correct they will be weak. I have not seen any indications that this is a metal problem.

All it takes is the wrong person with an impact gun! You may want to replace all the lugs at this point to avoid further problems.

well I have never used an impact gun on it and I can't remember anyone else using one either. But your right, I guess I will probably just replace them all when I have time.

I was driving to work last year before a holiday weekend and the low pressure warning light came on. I pulled off the highway and into the nearest parking lot and heard the air hissing out from a nail hole. I quickly drove to a nearby NTW who broke a lug during the repair. Total hassle going back later for them to replace the lug at no charge, but at least they pointed it out and took care of it.

I had that happen. had my tires rotated and then a week later I thought that I had lost a lug nut, when I looked closer, the whole post was gone. The place that rotates my tires uses a torque wrench as well, I've seen them... I have never seen that happen before on any of my other toyotas. I think there was something wrong as well.
