MAF sensor

On my 2000 4runner 3.4L V6, the check engine light came on, had it diagnosed in the toyota dealer and they say the MAf sensor needs to be replaced. I cleaned the MAF sensor with an electrical cleaner, reset the computer(took negative cable from battery),but from time to time the engine light would come on and then off and lately more often and would stay lit for a long time.Dont really know what to do right now, if i had a bad maf sensor or something else. The truck runs fine but i dont know for how long?Do you guys have any suggestion with this dilema of mine?

If the CEL is still throwing codes related to the MAF, I would replace. My rig had the same symptoms, replaced the MAF, and all is good. Been ridin without CEL for 1+ yr

Do either of you use oiled air filters? I believe the codes are similar if not the same for MAF and O2 sensors... so be sure of what it is first

I have paper filter on mine, when i got it diagnosed, the toyota tech said it was the maf, i tried cleaning the maf with an electrical cleaner twice, the cel would come off(after resetting the com) but would come on after a few mins of driving then off, im thinking the maf is working interminently or something else is broken and not the maf since it looks fine when i cleaned it and my t4r is well taken cared off and no offroad driving with it. here are some pics.

the MAF is designed to last only about 80K miles, no matter how many times you clean it.
IMO just get a new one, and forget about for another 80K miles.

MAF's are not designed to last 80k. They will last untill the heat wire (senses the airflow by the temp of the wire) gets enough crap built up on it where it doesnt work anymore... usually setting off a p0171 code if i remember correctly. If you have this code the first thing i would do is take out the maf, get a flashlight and look at the wire inside. If it looks fuzzy like there is dust on it, that is your problem. I dont mess with cleaning them because usually you just end up buying a new maf when the light comes back on, and your out money for the can of cleaner haha. If the wire looks fine its usually a A/F sensor(s) issue, or possibly another issue with the maf, ie. connector. 9times out of 10 its the maf tho with 4runners. good luck!

I have had very good results with using a q-tip and electrical contact cleaner my runner threw a maf code about a yr ago I took it out cleaned it & haven't had a problem since.

I had a the check engine light come on once and the dealer diagnosed it as a MAF sensor replacement costing about $450 including labor.

Instead I just followed this (section on cleaning MAF): http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/maintenance/tacoma_4runner_30k/maintenancep5.html

bought a can of electrical cleaner for $5 and about 30 minutes of effort.

Still using the original MAF sensor and have about 100k miles on it. Did have to do it twice since my air filter let through a lot of pollen - noticed that it happened when the pollen count was really high.

MAF

Just had my MAF replaced on my '99... It was running a little rough, the check engine light had come on and went off after I reset it... and came back on again.. so I went ahead and had the MAF replaced, now she is running like new
