I lived in Toronto for almost all of my life. I recently transplanted my entire family to sunny California. I heard Toronto had the coldest February ever recorded. Ouch!
My experience was that if you didn't oil spray (rust check/krown/wax oil spray) your car, it would not make it well past 10 years.
I had my modified Subaru Legacy 2.5GT for 11 years. I bought it brand new, and had the dealer put on the wax oil spray. The doors were fine, the under carridge did well. However the truck started to rust still (a bit from the inside where the oil spray could not get at, and also teh sunroof rusted out for which I had to replace it when it was 7 years old).
However stuff like brake calipers, park brake cable, etc that couldn't be oil sprayed meant that every year you had to service your brakes by essentially doing a brake job without replace parts. You just had to wire wheel the tabs for the brake pads after you knocked them out of the caliper bracket with a hammer, added new grease/antiseize, clean and lube your sliders, and check your piston(s) wasn't seized. I did the work myself did two times a year (when I switched out my tires).
My SUbaru was awesome in the snow... It was a 2003, so it had a real limited slip rear differential (unlike the 2005+ ones that rely on the computer + rear brakes to simulate a limited slip). Along with a fixed 50/50 transaxle I could rally that car like there was no tomorrow. It also had no stability management, nor tracition control... just ABS. I sadly sold her before moving to California. I figured a 11 year old car from the salt belt, manual transmission, lowered with BBS wheels, Bilstein STi shocks, whiteline springs, and metric spedometer would have very little interest in California.
I personally think my old 2003 Subaru with snow tires would literally do circles around my 2015 4runner even if I put snow tires on the 4runner.
