Maint Indicator

On my new (used) 2008 Limited, the MAINT indicator light came on. It seems from a search of the forums this is just an oil change indicator, not the equivalent to a CHECK ENGINE (OBD) light, is that correct?

If so, why didnt they just use an indicator that said "change oil" or similar?

It is the indicator of Oil Change.

'Maint' is shorter, and space is a premium. And on a more devious level, maybe it will bring in some money to the dealers. I know my maint light scared the crap out of me when I first saw it after buying mine.

It's just a mileage reminder light, flashing at 4500 miles and solid at 5000.
