Am deploying soon for 6 months and was looking for suggestions on preventive maintance on my 2001 SR5 4x4 4Runner (168K). Below is a tenative list of planned items:

timing belt and water pump
plugs and wires
all fluids and lube


Appreciate all suggestions.

are you gonna do those before or after? I'd say wait till you get back. My 4runner held up great on my last 7 month tour, It was kept in the on base storage parking lot. I got a full cover for it, some gas stabilizer, and disconnected the battery. After returning I did a fluid change too.

Have a local place that is going to store and perform the work at their leasure. Want it ready as soon as I get back for a major road trip.

haha my dad picks up their waste oil for them, they are pretty pricey compared to many shops around here. I think it would be wiser to just store the truck somewhere under cover then get everything done right away when you come back cause it will just sit outside at their shop the whole time. Ive got a toyota mechanic that does alot of work on the side and i could probably hook you up with him when you got back to have the timing belt and water pump etc. done. All that you listed takes only a matter of a couple hours to do.

:iagree: The cover is important if it's going to sit outside. I had oxidation on my hood when I got back from a 7 month tour in Iraq. Then just change the oil when you get back and it should be fine.

if its not gonna get driven at all i would put it up on jack stands or blocks so that the tires dont get flat spots to, run some stabil through it then drain the gas tank before you leave so that that the gas doesnt go bad dirty up the tank.

Isn't there an additive you can add to the fuel to keep it from separating over a period of time? I know there's a additive like Dry Gas that people put into generators during time of year that they don't need it.

there are several brands that have fuel stabilizer, I forget the names though. Any auto store will have them.

X2 on the blocks idea. That is unless you want to do tires as well when you get back. Have fun with the Hilux's over there!
