Maintenance light

First off, yes I searched. But somehow came up with zero results. I find it difficult no one has ever asked about the maintenance (or maint) light....but I digress.

As you might have guess, mine is on. I can handle my own work, no issues. But what is the maint light based on? Does it actually have sensors that track oil condition et al.? Or is it simply mileage based. Like I believe most are.

Second, how do I turn it off? Is this something I can do or do I have to drag it to the stealership?

thanks!

The light is a primative one; it's based solely on 5k miles. It doesn't factor cycles or hours like some more sophisticated ones. It begins to flash at 4.5k miles and steady at 5k.

To turn it off:
1) Shut the vehicle off with total mileage displayed (not one of the tripmeters).
2) Push and hold the tripmeter reset button.
3) Turn the ket to the 'on' position but do not start the vehicle.
4) After several seconds the maint light will flash and go out. That's it! You're done:)
