Maintenance question

I just bought a new, for me anyway, 2003 4runnner with 25,000 miles. My question is, I can't find anything on when the transmission oil should be change or fuel injectors cleaned. It has a 4.0 litre V6 engine.

Thanks ToyotaDoodz.....I did find that sight and it was helpful, but that is the sight that has nothing on transmission fluid changes and fuel injector cleaning.

Toyota mentions nothing about the transmission fluid or cleaning the fuel injectors. I've heard that the 2004 models don't need it changed ever.

To answer your question, my dealer recommends changing the transmission fluid at 60,000 miles and the fuel injector cleaning at 15,000 miles. I really don't feel that cleaning the fuel injectors is needed that early though.

In the 2004 V8 there isn't even a place to check the AT fluid. I'm not sure about 2003s or the V6.

As far as spark plug cleaning goes, read the excellent articles on the Sticky Topic "Fuel Injector Cleaning." There doesn't appear to be a specified interval by Toyota.

I had 130K miles on my 1995 Landcruiser and never cleaned the injectors and it ran just great. Just use a name brand fuel that has cleaners in the fuel. Should not be a problem. 60K miles on the transmission fluid is fine. welcome to the site.

From a past thread written by a professional techinician and posted by thai, i remember it stating that fuel injection cleaning is the biggest waste of money, in this day and age the fuel injecter is one of the most durable parts in your car and dont need anything extra, especially with the additives in gas and etc these days.

the atf is supposed to be "lifetime fluid"... i think i read it should be changed around 60k if you do alot of heavy duty stuff, ie towing, but if you just do regular driving you need to change it around 90k miles. and the atf is supposedly really expensive... maybe $10-15/qt

It is a lifetime fill fluid. It is Toyota ATF"WS". The WS stands for "world standard" they changed it from 2003 to 2004 and removed the transmission dip stick. Even though I don't tow I plan on having my 2004 serviced at 50K miles and I will make sure that the service advisor notes that "WS" ATF needs to be used. I want to have it done at 50K miles so that if any problems arise it will be covered under the 60K mile warranty. Figure that it will then give me 10K miles for any problems to show up. By the way you have to use the Toyota WS fluid, there is no equal made and don't believe anyone that says the Amsoil or XYZ company makes one that will work. If you do you will be paying for a new transmission out of your own pocket.

I don't think you can mix these two fluids, it states not to mix them. Now if you wanted to do a complete fluid exchange that might work. You would have to run this by the Toyota experts and the cost would be huge since you would have to run at least 18+ quarts through it to make sure you had all the old stuff out and only had the WS fluid in the transmission. I bet it would cost you close to $400 to do the fluid exchange. If I were you I would stick with Toyota type IV and just do a fluid exchange. JMHO

dipstick on 5spd

I have a dipstick on my '03 5 spd. auto. I think midway through the production year they stopped providing a dipstick for the tranny. I flush my tranny every 30K miles, old habit.

I understand that when they discontinued the dip stick in the 04 5speed transmission they changed from the Type IV fluid to the WS fluid. I think fluid exchange is the best way to maintain your transmission. I did that on my 95 LC and it was in great shape. I was told by a transmission specialist that you should never put anything other than transmission fluid in your transmission. So never let anyone put a "flushing/cleaning" agent in your transmission. Even though I will be trading my 4runner at the 80-90K mile mark I will have the transmission service performed at 50K miles, but I doubt I will have them do a fluid exchange since this WS fluid is such high dollar stuff.
