It's only a basic timer , it starts every 4500 miles flashing then it'll be on constant at 5000 miles just reset it yourself, it means nothing. It's just a reminder

just looked up in the owners manual, it's basically the same way as resetting the oil procedure. can you chime in on that.

Yes same procedure, I do mine with my service as I do all my own maintenance. It's good to know how to do sometimes the dealers forget to reset after a service .Push down the reset button turn the key wait .... Super easy.

got it, thanks for chiming in. i will reset it tomorrow. so basically this light comes on every 5k and you just do the required maintenance and reset the light. it's a little different than my tacoma.

I have always found the message "maintenance required" a little funny. People seem to equate "maintaining" the vehicle with "omg fml something is terribly wrong". An oil change light would probably make better sense - given that the new 14+ have a frigging screen it should literally tell you what to do, not give some bs cryptic message that anyone who didn't read the manual will not understand. Every 5 k, rotate your tires - they will last a lot longer, and then reset the light. At 10 k have the oil changed and reset the light.

I use the maintenance app and i think it works well. You can set reminders for all sorts of stuff as well as some custom reminders. I use those over anything else.

I'm not sure if you need a specific Entune edition or not...

I do the same thing and it works great. Did the same in my Lexus and was happy to see that the 4runner had the same option. (at least my '15 TEP does).

Shit I thought that meant it was time to buy something new for the 4runner!
isn't it always time to buy something new for the runner? :thumb3:

i didn't know there was an app for that. if it's free i'll get it.

So just to clarify then, the "Maintenance Required" light does in fact serve as a reminder for the periodic oil change, right?

Mine also lights up every 5k miles. But, as I understand it, the suggested oil change frequency for synthetic oil is 10k miles for our 4runner, right?

that seems to be correct.

Samsung, I should clarify that the "app" is through Toyota's Entune software, not something you can purchase through Apple or Android. I have the 2014 Trail and select the APPS screen, then select the maintenance APP.

That said, I'm sure there are free auto maintenance apps out there that allow you to customize maintenance schedules, probably for multiple cars. If not, there's my million dollar idea! (Don't tell anyone)

Yes - it will show up every 5K miles. I don't know if it is still a standard thing, but when I bought mine, I got free maintenance for 25K miles. I also got a small booklet (despite never actually getting an owner's manual - different story :mad2: ) highlighting what needs to be done. They do all of that for free. I don't have it with me right now, so I can't 100% confirm, but the short version is this:
Tire rotations every 5K miles (so I will get 4 of those)
Oil change every 10K (2 of those)
Air filter (under the hood and in-cabin) somewhere around 15 or 20K, I believe

I think that pretty much covers it.

From what I understood every 5000 miles is considered a maintenance period. The message is first maintenance required soon and then it becomes maintenance required.
