I have her trained and she will call me. She already had O’Reilly’s pull the codes. She was still 3.5 hours from our Montana home and wanted to know if she was ok to continue driving it home. I did all the research and concluded she would be ok, but admonished that if she had any braking issues, she was to halt the drive (she was going over passes between Coeur d’Alene, ID and Missoula, MT). She made it fine and our local mechanic (he wants to hire me after I retire) had it repaired in a day.

I bought my 2014 in '21 with 97K on the clock and a full dealer service history from the original owner. Every time I take it for routine service the dealer says some version of 'what year is this?' It's got about 109K on it now and just did a weeklong Utah road trip with some mild off-roading and it still runs and drives like a new one. Only current issue is a bad clock spring but I have a new one sitting on the workbench waiting for time to replace. Looking forward to many many more miles of fun with this rig.

Transmission was replaced at 360K due to delayed engagement. Replacement was from salvage with 43K miles on it. Cost was $800. Install cost was $1,085. Works perfectly.

Curious to know if you always ran 87 octane gas in all of those miles ?

How long was the delay? I have seen a few other members have this and their theory is neutral safety switch.

I tend to believe valve bodies get worn.

It was not long and typically occurred after harder full stops, then go. I’ve seen this happen when the transmission fluid was a bit low after a fluid change and 8 oz more fixed it.

That could have been the cause of the delay in the original transmission. The fluid filter and pick up is at the rear of the pan. Stop hard, fluid slams forward and the pick-up cavitates allowing air into the system. I still have the original transmission.

Pan drop, filter change, pump 12+ quarts through until it’s clear.

Thanks, that means a lot.

Compared to my diesel guys at The Truck Stop forum, the Toyota 4Runner guys seem to be less interested in the mechanical problem solving work and more interested in upgrades like suspension, lights, etc. A lot that is due to the fact that these vehicles are so reliable. In contrast, my old K2500 Suburbans with 6.5 diesel constantly have me working on something.
