i dont think that has to do with it, the MAINT light is just for oil changes, and is only lighted up every 5000 or close to 5000 miles

How many miles ago was the last oil change? If it has been more than 5K and you are using regular oil it is time for an oil change.
If you did it yourself < 5K miles ago you probably did not realize that the Maint light needed to be reset.

From my experience it also indicates other problems. I don't have any literature to prove my point, but when I dug the muffler into the dirt once the maintenance light went on. Once the muffler could "breath" again, the light went off.

EDIT: Come to think of it, that was nearing an oil change. It might just have been some sort of coincidence.

Maintenance light is strictly a timer for routine maintenance like oil changes...

Check engine light is of course for mechanical problems...otherwise known as an "idiot light" :)

The Maint light is a "dummy light" it is only based upon miles, nothing else. It does not have any sensors or anything that can signify a larger problem.
