Make a Trail Edition rear emblem with Plasti Dip

So after blacking out the chrome lace along the bottom and the door handles... I decided to give the rear emblem a shot. I think it turned out looking great and it's so easy to do...

Tape around the area with newspaper. Spray 5 coats waiting about 10min between coats (Don't worry about taping perfect lines since its ok to get it on your paint since you will just peel off any excess later):

Remove the tape and newspaper 10min after the final coat. The excess plastidip on your paint will start to come right off along with the tape. Any additional plasti dip can be peeled away very easily without taking off the plastidip from other pieces since there is a gap between them.

Using a toothpick to not damage the painted chrome, pick away at the emblem to create enough of a hole for you to grab and peel away the plasti dip:

And here is a finished look after removing the plasti dip from the 4Runner logo:

I like that better than the TEs rear valance, as the "4Runner" lettering on the SR5 and LE is not bright chrome but has a metted finish. I may have to do this to mine.

That looks great! I am glad to see that it can be done without removing the garnish from the vehicle.

Did you use Plastidip on the door handles too? If so, did you take off the door handles before using the Plastidip on them, or did you leave them in place like you did with the rear garnish.

Yup, and I left the handles on. Got a little too tape happy though, and taped everything off since it was my first time and I wasn't quite sure how easy this stuff would be to peel... so if I were to do it again I would just tape off one square section around the whole handle and then peel off the excess after. Way easier than trying to tape perfectly.

People have been using this stuff for years with no problems. If you do somehow get a chip or something, you just reapply a bit to touch up that area. Cleans off easily with normal soap and water (Just don't use tire shine as I hear that is damaging to it).

Regarding the tire shine, I can't remember specifically where I first heard it was damaging but if you google "tire shine plasti dip" you'll see a lot. Maybe the tire shine you use doesn't have a certain chemical that others have causing the erossion.

Question, how do you think one would mask an area to do a section of plasti dip that has no gap? I have done a set of wheels on my dual axle trailer as a test but did the entire wheel. I'd like to do the legs of my 14 Trail wheels but just the face of the legs, if that makes sense to you. In my testing on the trailer wheels I masked the center caps to only do the portion sticking out from the rim and buggered the dip where I removed the masking tape. Did peel the tape first when the dip had dried then next batch immediately after the final coat (had seen that on a YouTube video). Both pulled the dip from where I wanted it to stay (beyond the tape). Cutting it would not really be an option. Only other approach I had thought of is to let it dry and peel the dip from the tape to see if it separates at the tape edge.

I think you might be SOL with plasti dip and your idea... You could try when you pull the tape off, to keep a finger with pressure on the area the tape is separating from. This way, hopefully the plastidip on the wheel stays in contact with the wheel and doesn't lift from the wheel with the tape.
