So I got a Smittybuilt Modular grille guard from some guy in my area for $50. The reason it was $50 was because he screwed it up (the part of the guard that connects to the car, one of them was bent over 90 degrees). I got a blowtorch and heated it up for a while and was able to hammer it back to being kinda straight. However, I don't have brackets with which to attach it to my t4r.
The guy who sold it to me said that if i called Smittybuilt and told them that I have outland modular grille guard for my 98 4runner and over the years the brackets and bolts have become worn and rusted and I would like new ones, they would send me new hardware for free. He claimed he did this once before. I just called and they gave me the part number for the hardware kid (# 60309) and said that I had to order it from one of their distributors and it retailed for around $154.
I was wondering if i could use a make-shift bracket? It seems like all i need is a steel plate with holes that would line up with the ones on the guard and the holes under the bumper where it attaches. Anyone ever done this before? Anyone have any suggestions?
Trying to save some money by getting this guard for $50 hasnt turned out great so far. I'm up to 80 (spent 30 on a blowtorch to straighten out the guard) and now Smittybuilt wants $154 for new brackets. And to think, i passed up a similar grille guard for $150 from a guy off yotatech....grrrr...i'm stupid :cursin:
