Making the hood scoop functional?

Has anyone with a hood scoop hood turned the scoop into an actual functional one? I have been searching and havent found anything on it it would be nice to make it funtional so the air would hit the SC or turn it into a ram air intake that would be nicer

You can just remove the insert if you would like to make it functional. I bought a Certifit hood and never bought the insert so mine is "functional" but i doubt it really does a whole lot. It does direct the air right on to the supercharger so it may cool it a little but i can't see it making a huge difference.

My rig also has a functional hood scoop, but I blocked it off because alot of dust and dirt comes in through the scoop, not to mention rain and snow.

I have thought of opening it back up for one reason: IMO it does make a big difference in underhood temps. Although I never took measurements to confirm that, when the scoop was open, I could sit at stoplights and see the heat just pouring out of the scoop. It looked just like the blurry waves you see coming off asphalt on a hot day. It also creates a vent for air coming in through the grille and radiator to exit the engine bay, taking heat along with it.

In this picture, you can see how it was made functional. Basically the back of the hood scoop insert was cut off with a dremel. You can also see in this pic how I blocked it off. That black piece can be easily removed if I want to run with it open.

This is the part # for the black peice. There should already be one of these inside your hood scoop (assuming it's factory). If you cut the back of the insert off, you'll end up cutting the back of this peice off too, but it's cheap if you want to have an extra for blocking it back off when you need to.

I need to get one of them. I feel like all my scoop does is exactly that… Scoop crap under my hood. The way I see it, there are tons of rigs out there with no scoop and no temp problems so why have the crap all over my engine.

That's exactly what I was thinking of doing just cutting the back part and keeping the mesh to block big debris or bugs but keep the air flowing I may just to that when I have time, I think it would make a big difference since it lines up with the super charger I think it would Cool it off petty good

This topic is almost as old as the 3rd gens are and I've never seen proof of any gains from cooling the engine as it would be so minimal at best.

An open sccop just invites dirt and debris in the engine comparment and a dirty engine will run hotter and negate any cooling effect you MIGHT see anyway. I just keep mine buttoned up since I'd rather have a clean engine vs a slightly cooler engine bay.

if you can find some way to make this thing work with the 3rd gen you can have a ram air effect. i think its too big for the scoop but someone with some "smarts" might get it to work. this one is for the newer tacomas

sounds logical to me.

OP, don't you agree that you will simply be channeling water into the intake?

On that one for the tacoma, that intake scoop is positioned between the grill and hood.

There is a negative pressure area in the middle of the hood, so a Ram air effect CANNOT take place with our scoops.

Notice vehicles that do have functional scoops. The scoop is either way up on the front of the hood by the grill (Firebird, etc..) where there is a positive pressure area, or the scoop is so tall that it grabs air despite the negative pressure area (Subarus, etc..)


If you try to make that scoop fit into our trucks, you will not get a Ram air effect, air may even be sucked out of the intake and cause the engine to have to work much harder than it should. Your best bet is to keep the scoop closed and keep the stock intake that goes through the fender..

just go to Volants website and search for "ram air kit." its I'm not to familiar with how it will work with our trucks but depending on the modifications i think it can still be possible.

If you do make it possible i guarantee some of "Scoopers" will be sending you some $$ for what you fabbed up

Oh those pics are deff nice I have been thinking about it all day and went over it with my brother w came with the conclusion that since the purpose of the 4runner for me is offroad maybe just cutting it open would he better and not making the ram air cause that would mean changing the air filter very often because of all the dirt but I don't mind the dirt UN the engine bay I clean it after every time I go offroad

if you want a cold air intake, just do the elbow mod and remove the right corner light. won't get much colder than that

easy .....drop 5 lbs of dry ice into your airbox..........or better yet to get rid of that nasty co2 contamination problem fill your isr up with dry ice, that's cool the air as it comes through your intake!!!!!:ak472:
