Was just out there in October. Can't say how the trails would be in December.
I enjoyed the following sites:
* Hot Creek Geological Site -- Beautiful at Sunrise (can't go in while dark too many fatal accidents)
* Owens River Fishing access Dirt and offroad area Accessible from a turn off just SE of the Brown's Owens River Campground entrance. (37°41'37.7"N 118°45'22.1"W) Lots of Dirt paths of varying difficulty, Some nice banked turns built up, beware of some pockets of deep sand under any snow.
* Casa Diablo Mountain - Lots of fun forest service roads and camping in the surrounding National Forest. Great panoramic views of the White Mtn. Range at sunset.
Of all the places we stopped between big Pine and Mono Lake the Paiute Palace Gas Station NW of Bishop on 395 had the best price on Gas.
The Guys at the Chevron in Mammoth (3236 Main St, Mammoth Lakes, CA 93546) treated me very well! Gas price was reasonable and they helped me fix my Tow Ball that I forgot to take out before going off the road in the Owens River area. Which I kinda needed since I'd towed my popup and were moving base camp up towards Mono Lake.
