Manual Hub Conversion Questions

I've read a number of threads on manual hub conversion. It looks as simple as picking up spindle assemblies and axle shafts from a manual hub Tacoma and popping them on.

One thing I need to clarify though: can the ADD differential and stub shafts be retained? Or do you also need to convert to a non-ADD diff?

Another way to ask this is: can you have manual hubs as well as ADD?

Thanks folks, and Happy New Year!

You can absolutely retain the ADD jack shaft- that's what I have done.
As far as the "stub shafts" go- what are you referring to?
The manual axles pop right into the diff/jack shaft.
Using the Tacoma knuckles- that the manual wheel hubs are pressed onto- will not allow you to keep ABS.
You can press the manual wheel hubs onto the spindles on the 4Runner knuckles, and keep your ABS. Make sure you use the ABS ring from the 4Runner, and ditch the spacer- that takes its place- from the Tacoma.
You'll need new wheel bearings if you press the manual wheel hubs onto the 4Runner/ABS knuckles/spindles.

Tyler,

Thanks for the correction -- what I meant by "stub shafts" is indeed the ADD jack shaft. I was getting confused with early IFS systems that have shafts on both sides.

Since my 4Runny is not ABS equipped anyway then this conversion should be pretty straightforward.

Awe man! I'm jealous.
Then yes; it's an extremely straight-forward swap!
Curious-
On the non-ABS rigs, they must have a VSS in the t-case/trans, yeah?
I've heard the ABS rigs use the ABS sensors for the speedo- I'm interested in what would be involved in converting it to an actual VSS setup.

You need a Tacoma speed sensor AND the pigtail, wire, soldering iron, solder.

If you want your speed into work right, you need a SGI-5 from Dakota Digital.

Any more questions feel free to ask.

You can retain your ADD shaft, but also "convert" it to a manual shaft with nothing but a hose clamp.

Doc, read through your whole write- ups, great job and thank you!. I notice you are a 99. I just picked up everything for my manual conversion last week. I'm wondering if I will have the same issue with the VSS or not. Guess I will find out when I do it. Already hate the ABS, as it keeps trying to destroy my truck, there's no way I'd go through the trouble to keep it.

As to your complete ABS delete. Can you give an idea of how you ran the brake lines and how it performed afterward.

So, when I did. Y conversion, as my thread states, if I hit a bump/pothole hard enough, my speedometer would quit working.

When I did my 8.4 swap in the back, I lost ALL speed sensors, so my speedo ceased to function.

I got a Tacoma Speed Sensor from a guy, with the pigtail.

YOU NEED THE PIGTAIL/CONNECTOR.

From there, I wired it into my gauge cluster, and have since bought a Dakota Digital SGI-5 to correct the speedo. I'm going to do a write up on that in my thread, as I just remembered how to make it read right. (Truck has been down for a while.)

As far as the ABS delete, I just ran the lines where the stock ones were. Across the firewall, and down the firewall.

I need to bleed them, as I've since done some brake work, but they function just fine.
