Manual Trans. Noise

My 84 22R stock 4Runner with 346K miles makes a clicking noise in every gear but 4th. I am guessing since 4th is 1 to 1 ratio thats why the noise stops. Under down shifiting the noise goes away also. I would like some suggestions. Complete rebuild of the "G" Trans or look for a "W" series Trans.
This is my first post.

Welcome to the forum!

How do you know its coming from the transmission? Could it be coming from the drive shafts, engine or diffs? Anyway you could get a video clip of the sound?

346k is a nice little chunk of miles there.

have you checked/changed the gear oil recently?

its hard to tell based on that description, but it could be bad bearings, especially with that many miles.

at that point, you are better off just getting a different trans and swapping it in.

The engine has 40k on it and runs like a top. U-joints are good. In 1st at 3000rpm the clicking sound is slow in 3rd at 3000rpm the sound is much faster. So i think that rules out the engine. The sound is from the center of the truck and not the rear diff. This is all in 2WD

It's quite possible it's the tranny but check the u-joints as mentioned above. I wouldn't spend the money to rebuild the tranny since you can buy a junkyard one or one from someone parting out their rig for a couple hundred bucks or less.

I found a W56 out of an 85 pickup for $100. I have a carb motor. Will this 85 Trans for an injected motor bolt in my 84?

it will bolt in, but your t-case wont work.

most likely its has a top shift t-case, whereas you should have a forward shift case.
