Good point. A power steering delete is next on my list of things to do.
But really, if we want to truly be real men, there is only one solution: cut a hole in the floor board and Fred Flintstone it up any and every obstacle. No pansy internal combustion engines allowed for real men :thumb:

The 4.7 is overkill. Just get a 2.28 . Then you have 1:1, 2.28:1, 2.56:1 and 5.84:1
I don't 3 foot, I three leg. Foot on gas, foot on clutch and hand on hand brake.

I'll have to keep that in mind. Duals isn't going to happen for awhile anyway.
And oh I do that all the time. But on the steep stuff, my hand brake just doesn't hold it. So it's foot on the clutch, foot half on the brake, half on the gas, and a hand also on the hand brake :bigok:
I have tried to do the whole hand on hand brake and let the clutch out just enough to where it holds me, then get on the gas quickly and take off, but that usually results in me sliding down the hill with all 4 tires spinning. Maybe one day I'll actually be decent at wheeling a manual, who knows lol.

using an adapter, you bolt the LOW RANGE portion of a transfer case in front of another complete case, giving you the option to run double low.

I just went off roading today for the first time in a 5-speed. I have always wheeled in an auto up until this point.
Sure, a manual is better downhill. No doubt. But, in my '06 4runner, I could put it in 1, 2, 3, 4, or D while in 4lo or hi. So really no difference, But here is the big problem. In my manual I have to go SO FAST over rocky road! You think 4lo is slow but it really is not. I was bouncing all over the place or stalling out. I could not proceed as slowly or as cautiously as I could in the auto, and that is ROUGH on the truck.
How can I crawl over imbedded rocks slower without spending a fortune on a crawl box?? I don't want to have to do this modification. I have talked to WAY too many 4runner guys who claim the 5-speed with e-locker to be the best "out of the box" off road 4runner of all time. Well, I've got a locked 5-speed and while the locker is just magic, I don't know what to think about the manual. I'm moving way too fast and rolling all over the place. My e-brake was hardly enough to hold me sometimes, and starting near cliff edges was not fun. Any advice from all those who voted 5-speed?

I'm an auto guy myself, but I'll still give you my advice if you want it! Hahaha. I'd say keep practicing your clutch control. As you said, too much speed can result in not only a rough ride, but you tend to break a lot more often too. There is however a difference between going too fast and keeping your momentum going in a manual. There is sometimes that you will need momentum to help you through an obstacle. Finding out how much momentum, well that just takes practice. I'd expect the clutch to be roasted a number of times before you really get the feel of how to wheel in the manual. My advice would be to try to go as slow as you can. Did you try using the e-brake at all? You can use the brake so you don't roll back when starting and to help control your speed.

Practice. Don't slip the clutch if you can help it - ideally, you'll let the clutch out and then give the truck just enough gas to keep it from stalling. If you can idle/crawl through a section without giving it any gas at all, that's perfect. With an automatic you had the luxury of nosing up to an obstacle and throttling up until you cleared it. With the five speed, you're going to learn to pick lines, and throttle up in front of obstacles just enough to "bump" yourself up them only when you have to. The automatic is definitely more forgiving, but once you get good at wheeling the manual you'll have more control (and more drivetrain efficiency, and fewer moving drivetrain parts, etc). Hopefully you don't burn your clutch up before you get there.
If you're serious about wheeling a manual, you'll eventually want to invest in transfer case gears or a doubler box anyway, which makes it ten times easier.

X1000 that's literally the first real money I'm spending my my truck now instead of burning up my clutch or going backwards downhills

I know what you mean...One work-around is to air the tires way down - they'll soak up a bunch of the bone jarring ride over the rocks when you can't go any slower (in 1st lo at idle).
