Manually Reading CEL Codes

Is there a way to read CEL codes on a 4th Gen without an OBD reader, i.e. some combination of pressing buttons and turning the key? And then clear them too?

I'm trying to help out a friend long-distance over the phone.

Thx!

send your friend to AutoZone or Advance Auto Parts where they will read the codes for free. Most will give you the tool to use yourself in their parking lot.
Some will read the codes and not delete them.

Or suck it up and get a TechStream and software on Ebay to run on a laptop.
Clear DTC codes and a whole lot more...

Good luck.

No, that was with the old OBD-I systems in 95 and older vehicles.

Bummer. I have an OBD reader for my Google Nexus that works pretty good. But my friend does not have anything like that. I think he just left his gas cap loose. So I guess we will see if the code clears after a couple of drives.

Thanks for the quick responses.
