Map Light Console Wiring (Dash Cam)

So I am installing a dash cam in my 4R. I want to hard wire the camera such that I am not taking up the cigarette lighter space all the time or having an unsightly wire hanging around.
To do this, I have disassembled one of those 5V (2.1A) phone charger USB adapters. This will allow me to easily convert the 12V the car makes to the 5V the camera requires.
I attempted to tap into the wiring going into the map light console. I was tapping into the traction control button as this powers on/off with the ignition. When I connect the USB charger, it does not power up correctly. I know my adapter works as I connected it to my bench top tester outputting 12V and it works fine (outside of the vehicle).
The only thing i can think of is that somehow the vehicle is sensing the extra draw on the wire and retarding the line as to not provide too much power. I have not tried to find the main 12V source going to the map light console as I ran out of day light yesterday, but I was curious if anyone has wired anything from the map light console before? If so, did you have this issue?
If anyone can provide insight on a wire I can tap into for 12V it would be appreciated.

You could use an add-a-fuse from the fuse box and run a wire, it's really easy to remove the a-pillar cover to run a wire

This may ultimately be what I end up having to do. However, if i can tap the wiring right in the upper console, that would save me the task of having to run a wire all the way down.
