map light replacement

Does anyone know how to replace the map light bulbs? I can't figure out how to get into that housing.

i plan to change my lights too. going to try to do my own LED mod to make my lights brighter since my DOME light isn't as bright as i thought it would be. but here's a picture i found on 4runners.org. just peel off the plastic cover on the letter T then unscrew it.

Mine looks a little different than yours (mine's a 2005). I have the 2 map lights, and the sunglasses holder in front of them. I'll check to see if I have a plastic cap.

Just use a flat head screw driver to pry up one side of the lense itself. The lense will pull right off and then you can change the bulb.

Does this for 3rd gens too. Also what kind of bulbs do I need. Preferably some real bright or white looking.

There's the picture i posted up. That's for a 3rd gen T4R. Just use a flathead and get that plastic piece out. then you use a phillip to unscrew it.

I followed sharp4runr's advice and just took a small flat head and popped out the clear lens from the outer part of the lens, and they just popped out. I replaced the lights with red ones. In the dark, they do just what I want, give the passenger enough light to read and look for something with out blinding me as the driver.

Where did you guys buy your bulbs? I bet the red ones look pretty neato!

I got mine at Advance Auto Parts for like 2 bucks. They aren't the red glass, but I think are painted red. I couldn't find the red glass bulbs anywhere except online, but I didn't want to wait.

I replaced the passenger side with a high intensity white LED and the drivers side with RED LED for night use. The high intensity white illuminates the whole front seats area!
