Maplight Mod

I did the maplight mod so I can have my maplights go on with open doors. I just did the JA mod (Toyota 4Runner Maplight Mod) but I ran the wire to the dome light. You need to use the middle wire in the ribbon. I just used an IDC (insulation displacement connection) connector. Shave the wire and use the connector. I would suggest using a metal rod to snake the cord down otherwise it's a little difficult to move the wire through all the insulation. Other than that it's exactly the same as JA's writeup. So props to him.

I forgot to mention that this only took 20 minutes and that I used leds from V-leds.

I like this much better too. Is it just a standard wire, not multiple conductor?

Haha, me too! I’ve been bothered by the map lights not coming on with the doors since I bought the truck a year and a half ago! At first I thought there was something wrong with it until I read about the mod. Been meaning to do it since I first read about it, but it always seems that other mods take precedence when I have time to actually work on it.

Makes a world of difference. do it!!

I did mine the same way, but I tapped into the same wire at the A pillar instead of the center dome light.

Seems like when you have a sunroof as I do, it would be easier at the A pillar. I’d be afraid of detaching, or damaging one of the drains or something with the sunroof trying to snake around that.

hiccup with my mod

I just did this last week but had an issue....I ran the wire to the windshield column and spliced in with a quick splice connector, and the map lights work great now on opening the door, but the dome BARELY lights at all. Not sure how the circuit can be strong to the map light but now not to the dome. Any ideas?

Not sure re-splicing is a good idea, as it would risk an entirely dropped circuit....

Sounds like you don't have a solid connection there either at the light assembly or the center wire in the ribbon. Strip the insulation a little bit instead of using the splice connector to cut into it and use a pair of needle nose to crimp the little metal contact better.
