If I still had Cartilage in my knees I would try this.
Glad to hear there are some runners here. Congrats SV on your half!
I too am a runner, maybe to excess. I started exactly where you are and just built slowly. The best thing that I ever did was to get off the pavement and start running trails. Better scenery and more fun. Think of how much better it is to have your 4runner off road than on the Hwy. Well, same for running.
I almost died when I did my first 5k 7 years ago. Last year I ran a 50 miler and four 50k's. Those plus all the training runs put me close to 2000 miles for the year.
Don't underestimate what a little training can do. PM me if you have any specific training questions and I'll try to help. As someone who didn't pick up running until after the age of 30, I learned a few tricks along the way.

I wish I could get back into running but my back won't have any of it.
All I can say is that a year ago I could not run at all due to knee pain and last week I ran my first half marathon. 3 days later, my knees don't hurt at all.
Of course it is all about doing what works best for you as an individual, but I am sold!
That's impressive! There are definitely plenty of dirt trails around here to run and I do try and run trails when I can. Most of the half marathon I did was on a dirt trail but it was frozen and covered in packed snow. I'll do the incline in manitou springs with footofgod once in a while and the trail down is about a 3 mile run on the dirt. I do prefer the scenic runs, it really makes the runs a lot more enjoyable.
I'll have to try it. I was told last October (2012) that of I didn't stop running the I'd have knee replacements by the time I turned 21. But if that works with no pain then I'm game because I REALLY miss running
I prefer new balance; my sister prefers saucony. Are there any specialty running stores nearby? They'll analyze your stride and strike and give a wealth of knowledge in addition to selling you a pair of shoes.
