Marlin Ultimate Crawler in 2001-2002 Limited.

Do you guys think it can be done? The 2001-2002 has a much longer transmission and the limited has the all-wheel-drive t-case which is longer and has a motor hanging off the back.

Inquiring minds want to know..........

Marlin Ultimate is a 4.7 gear set in the front gear reduction housing and the stock 2.56 in the rear case. Effectively making it like 3 stock t-cases in a row.

230 to 1 final crawl. Not bad for a truck with leather seats and seat heaters.

Not without moving the gas tank and rear crossmember. My setup with a manual trans and manual tcase and the Marlin has maybe 2-3 inches of room. Both the auto trans and the multimode t case are longer than that.

IMHO, a 4.7 reduction would be kinda useless with the auto trans and you probably won't be able to stop it without shifting to neutral.

Oh it stops just fine in 230 to 1 in drive. The gas tank is fine, but the cross member met some fire.

Stopping was not the problem, the side torque on the drive train was the issue. All my other trucks were manuals with dual cases. Everyone said you don't need that with an auto.

Maybe you don't "need" it but the truck works a million times better now, like the 5-speeds with the crawlers. But even easier yet.

YES we have a 2001 Limited with heated leather seats and a 230 to 1 crawl.

I think an auto with a 2.28 would be more than enough and then you won't have a problem with stopping or the torque on the motor and trans mounts.

That cool that you did it. But if you did it already, why are you asking if its possible?

WOW, the crawler is assembled !!! The rear transfer case is from a 1997 Tacoma we bought to pull the engine, harness and trans from. So we already had this case.

I got Rory @ Rad Design to make me a Tacoma Triple Stick !!!

Up and in she goes. I had to plasma cut out the cross member in front of the gas tank to get enough room to stab it in.

The crazy shape of the shift levers, these took a considerable amount of time to build.

Crawler in place, see how crazy tight it is, the frame horn that was cut off is still missing.

ADD jack shaft removed from the front diff. A manual hub Tacoma jack shaft from a 1999 Tacoma was installed. This truck (2001 4Runner) already had Tacoma manual hubs installed. Simpler and stronger.

Manual hub jack shaft in place. This 2001 4Runner has a fornt ARB air locker, that is the blue line you see.

This is the re-moveable frame horn mount I made so the cross member can be re-installed and unbolted if needed.

Mount welded in.

Cross member bolted back in. The frame horn can be removed to remove the dual cases. Lil Skips gas tank skid see here.

Got some balls for my shifters !!! Both cup holders intact.

The trans cross member was modified as well, I'll have to get a picture of that too. It is different from the gas tank cross member.

nice job.

when I finally put duals in my 85, im running remote shifters also. it saves so much room, and I get to keep my console intact.

You Sir are not helping me at this moment! I want something like this in my 99 limited pretty bad ut not sure if I can keep my multi mode If I do this.

Blue.

You might be able to, as the 99 transmission is shorter. But you'll have to torch the cross member though. Measure back of t-case to front if gas tank. Add 3" or so to stab it in.

I could fab a cross member easy. Or just reuse the one I got that would not be hard. I"m going to have to look and see if it is possible. Darn you all. The ideas you put into my head.

No dash lights because everything the 4WD computer worked has been removed. The 4WD computer runs the motor on the back of the t-case and the front jack shaft. Both of those are gone. So the 4WD computer just thinks the truck is in 2wd all the time.

You shift the case and manually lock the front hubs.

This works on a 2001-2002 because as the years went by all the changes were add ons, if they changed or added something it got it's own litter computer box. Now in a 2003 and newer, I am willing to bet a lot of these things are controlled in the main computer.

Also there was no 2005+ manual hub Tacoma so there are no manual hub setups for the newer trucks.

I used the 4WD light switch on the passenger side of the Tacoma case to operate the dash 4WD lights, so the 4 green tires and center lock come on when it shifts to 4WD. The dash lights just complete a ground to light up.

The case is also twin sticked so you have have 2WD low and 2WD double low or 2WD triple low and the same 3 combos in 4WD. Twin sticking a new chain case is not easy.

Dick Foster and Wyatt Scott have write ups:

There are little plates that fall out when you split it and you have to get those back in for the case to work properly.

The only thing left is to do the "Bagel" mod, so only VSC turns off. That is the only thing that disabled when you locked the center in the multimode case. But I have wheeled it quite a bit the way it is and the VSC has not been an issue yet. ABS stayed on in the stock form, even though on an E-lockered 96-00 it goes off, the 01-02 are different beasts with a much better master cylinder and hydro boost type thing.

Very slick, Steve. I think the OEM console is my favorite part.

nice job.

Word. The triplestick isn't strictly necessary, but my boy will appreciate my keeping the rear heat. :)

Best part of this truck is the Leather Seats and the seat heaters. I have never seen another 3rd gen have seat heaters, even with all the trucks that come through here, none have ever had heated seats.

They come in handy.
