Mass airflow sensor

My roommate is looking at a 4Runner where the owner tried to remove the mass airflow sensor and damaged it.

He claims the engine will not run, but once the sensor is replaced, it will. Is it possible for the sensor to keep the engine from running, or does this sound fishy?

...Anyone?

We want to make sure there is nothing really wrong with the engine, as the guy says it's only the sensor that keeps it from running...

It turns out that this truck is the exact one she rolled in February, and this is the guy that bought it from her, fixed it, drove it for a while and decided to sell it now... We all know how much one can love their 4Runner, and she really wants it back, but not if there are huge problems...

!!

When I took out my MAF to install new spark plugs, I tried to run it to test before I put the MAF back together. My two roomies are GM mechanics, so they said it would run without it - WRONG!

It ran fine after I plugged the sensor back in. I didn't even have it hooked up to the throttle body.
