Master Cylinder Problems

Thanks. I might be in. Did Toyota change the Master Cylinder in 2004?

I was also looking at a re-manufactured one on ebay that another member had success with. Although it says in the comments (thru 09/04) which I'm assuming means that itll fit on 4runners up til 9/2004?

Anyone know how difficult it is to replace? I'm considering doing the work myself.

Yes the master cylinder was updated to a newer design in 2005 if I recall correctly. The connectors and module are different, so if you have an 03' or '04 you need a unit from an '03 or '04.

The biggest pain in the ass is bleeding the system as it works best with a scantool, physically replacing the unit isn't too hard; but you will be under the dash a bit, so if you're not on the thin side or bendy it can be annoying.

Do you know approx how long of a job it is? The dealer told me $1k labor (8 hours) + $2700 for the part. Although they did tell me that they want to diagnose it first to figure out what part is defective so they can just replace that part and not the whole assembly.

8 hours seems high to replace just the master cylinder and bleed the brakes. I think it's closer to 3~4hrs if I remember correctly, but I don't know if they are baking in diagnostic time as well. Either way it still seems a bit high to me, I'll check some stuff tomorrow and see if I can get a better labor estimate in hours for you.

I haven't had any luck in locating a "rebuild kit" for the master cylinder portion. Supposedly there is one out there according to one or two "members" (I use that loosely because for the most part they were vaguely offering services that they rebuilt these units but did not go into detail) but I haven't been able to verify their statements.

I'm bumping this topic to add that there is indeed a overhaul kit for the actual master cylinder portion of this assembly and I know new OEM motors can be found on eBay for aorund $500+/-, as far as the rest of the componets I haven't found any source for them, but it seems the motor and then the actual master cylinder O rings going bad seem to be the most common failures of this assembly.

When I looked up the Master cylinder piston kit, 0449360350, it is only listed a fitting the older style Master cylinder that was used in 4runners until the mid 2004. Has anyone checked if this piston is the same one for the 2005 to 2009 4Runner master cylinder?

I have a 2008 4runner and can't find a Master cylinder piston kit. I see that they have a piston kit for a 2008 Land Cruiser. Does anyone know if they use the same one?
