Anyone been there? I just left and still am in disbelief of how many Tacomas I saw. Literally at every traffic intersection there was at least 3 that were lifted and nice tires/wheels as well as many good looking 4runners. I'm too jet lagged/ hungover to look up the registration numbers but I get Toyota has a huge share of the market out there.

I was there few years back but don't remember too many Tacos. There was a healthy mix of Runners Tacos and Fjs.
 
Yup, Tacoma’s and 4Runners. They command a pretty penny as well. High demand. High theft as well.

Bring a full gas tank and a lunch with you to Hana trip. There is nowhere decent to eat in that town and gas is really $$$ compared to the rest of the island. Road to there is beautiful though...

Agreed! We drove it with our nissan sentra rental car. It was pretty cool, but a dangerous road. If you do it stop off at mile marker 22 and swim in the waterfall. As we were going up we passed a tow truck with a rolled van, then on the way down a crazy local gal passed us thinking no one was coming over the hill she could not see over.... turns out there was and she rolled her rig off the road. She was extremely lucky not to kill herself or anyone else. Awesome trip but boy is it a long flight.

Yup. Used to live there and the Tacos are better on the one lane roads than an f150.


Bring a full gas tank and a lunch with you to Hana trip. There is nowhere decent to eat in that town and gas is really $$$ compared to the rest of the island. Road to there is beautiful though...

The Ono burger is AMAZING!

I lived in Lahaina for a little bit, wonderful island. And, yes Tacomas everywhere, I had a 69 VW camper that I lived in for a bit there too.

Haha, I used to live in the back of an acupuncture clinic in Kihei. It was a $h*thole, but the rent was $125/month everything included. Slept on a straw mat next to the cockroaches, cane spiders, centipedes, and mice. Have a few stories about cane spiders and centipedes. Man, I will not miss those buggers especially when they burn the cane fields. :wow:

I got stung by one of those big ass brown centipedes one night, passed out on some beach recliners and it got me. Went to the hospital the next day with what looked like two giant pencil stab marks in my arm and a red line going into my armpit, that was fun.
 
I wonder how much these residents are willing to pay for a '07 V6 Sport with 71xxx miles shipped from the east coast :shrug: I definitely know Toyota ownership is high over there. Same with CA. I remember seeing a picture of a dealership that had a whole row dedicated to 3rd gen 4R's 5 years ago...not bad
 
I live in Hawaii. Paid 17,500 for my 08 sport with 86k 2 years ago. I had even looked at shipping one in. Found an 06 with 50k in NY for 16k. Would have had 19k in it to ship it. I paid to have it inspected, glad I did. Turns out the under carriage was rusted to death. Seller was a liar.

I'm on Oahu. Toyotas sell for a premium in the state of Hawaii in general. I had a 2015 Tacoma Prerunner. Put 50k miles on it in 2 years, and was still able to sell it for what I paid. Lol.

Sorry to hear that. Hate to hear about sellers like that. If I ever listed my 4Runner for sale in Hawaii market, I'd want to be honest with the buyer since it'd be a complicated sales transaction having to figure out logistics of shipping costs and local fees after agreeing to a sales price. Too much effort to try BS someone in the end in my opinion
 
I was also in Maui about 3 weeks ago and couldnt believe the number of Tacos there. Most of them were lifted to the sky but had small wheels and tires that stuck out a foot past the body. Overall, not my cup of tea.
 
My guess is because of their reputation for off road capabilities, durability/long lifespan, being smaller than full size trucks, and the proximity to Japan. Japan is about the same distance from Hawaii as the Midwest but you're dealing with one cargo ship versus semi/train/cargo ship so I'm not sure if that ever played a factor but I wouldn't be surprised. On an island where resources are limited and everything costs more ... longevity is one of the biggest reasons for buying a vehicle and its hard you beat Toyota in that area.

They were all over Hawaii. Aside from the main highways and cities, large parts of Hawaii are pretty rural with lots of rugged roads so the lifted rigs and big tires didn't surprise me.

Was in Kona on the Big Island last week and on the weekend saw a "procession" of maybe 20 or more Tacomas and 4 Runners and some with their lightbars on in the afternoon... ALL lifted and huge tires...was pretty cool !!
 
We need our Toyota’s. No one can afford a mortgage so they buy a Tacoma.
