Max depth for door speakers?

I have a set of Hertz 6.5's I'd like to put in the 4Runner. They were in a previous car and were a bit pricey just to toss. The front components are pretty deep, I'd say 2-3" based off memory.

I wanna say its the older version of these:
HSK 165 - Hertz Hi-Energy car audio speakers system

which means the mounting depth is ~2.7"

I also have a set of rear components, but the tweeter is fixed in the center of the woofer, for the rear. I believe they're the HCX165's. They also state theyre 2.71" deep, but I dont recall them being as deep as the fronts.

I know i'll need a spacer panel to convert from 6x9 to 6.5, but how much room is actually in the doors?

just make the right speaker spacer and itll fit, i have focal k2p series and its similar in size.

Do you remember the size of your spacer? Im thinking it'll have to be 3/4"-1".

i think 3/4 is fine. i cant get a pic, doors is all sound deadened with dynamat extreme back then. i think 1 inch spacers max thickness. or you will need to cut the door speaker rings. i also used fast rings on my speakers.

If you check my signature I have installed myself identical Hertz component speakers in all 4 doors. They fit great. There is ton of room if you do it the way I did. What you will have to do is to take OEM plastic speaker holders off (mine were JBL Synthesis 10 speaker) and trace them around on the plywood (I used 1/2"). Cut the plywood spacers out and mount them using same mounting locations. You first mount the 1/2" plywood spacers since you can still access them from the back to tighten the bolts. Then once spacers mounted you simply screw your speakers to plywood spacers. It holds great and solid (3 years now). I have some pictures.

depending on the speaker adaptor you get, but i was able to install some image dynamics cxs chameleon in the front and rear and still had plenty of space left. i believe they are about 3in top mount depth.

Awesome! This is the info I was looking for. I'll probably just buy spacers, I don't want to have to deal with getting MDF and all that.

I posted pictures just above (including showing crossover mounting location) but damn photobucket is not working. Lets try again. Yeah man, crossovers even a smaller ones are tricky, this is literally the only spot I could find inside the door. I tried different orientations and locations but none worked. And you don't need MDF to cut the spacers. I just grabbed some old plywood I had laying around

Well, you either throw speaker grills in the trash or leave them inside the door. I opted for the second.

Don't you see from the pictures that my vehicle is literally wrapped in sound deadener (all 4 doors inside and out, floor, rear cargo compartment, fenders, etc (I probably have over 100 sq ft of it installed throughout). If you look closer on the pictures you can see that I have sound deadener on both sides of the door, inside and outside of the door, so I'm not really sure what you trying to say with your comment?

just letting the op know that to get more from the speaker, some sound deadener will help a bit. you and i have invested some money in sound deadener.
