Max tire for 3" Icon lift?

Searching and reading countless threads, and I'm at a loss for just how big I can go, without rubbing, for new tires. As of a week from Tuesday, I'll be sporting a 3" lift (with UCA's), and chopping the front body mounts. Fender liner already trimmed to accommodate the Pelfrey bumper.

So - 33x12.5 or 305/70 that much bigger than a 285/70 (apparently the defacto standard on T4R's that have a lift) that I'll rub? Seems like a big difference in tire makes/models depending on size as well. I'm not planning LT, so what's the biggest I can go?

All help appreciated.

What wheel?

255/80R17 or 285/70R17 will have slight rub when stuffed. If you want bigger get a hammer.

if you are planning to use the suspension up travel, the lift isn't really of much help clearing tires, aside from the increase in castor you can achieve with the UCAs (helps move away from the body mounts), since when you're 'stuffed' the lift height isn't helping clear anything...your wheel offset will be a big contributing factor

All the reading I had done before putting 285/70/17's on my rig with 3" fox lift, yielded mixed results. Each vehicle is different so nobody can tell you what your results will be. I had to do the fender liner mod to keep mine from rubbing. Your results could differ.

Thank you for the input. Those tight fender wells create a bit more of an issue than the ones on my old FJ40 and FJ80.

FWIW - sounds like due to the overall variability of our trucks, and how well the 4x4 shop does with my lift install, I should probably stick with 285s. They will be close in height and a bit narrower than 33's or 305s - which should improve my chances of avoiding body rub.

Sorry for the noob question.

Like menioned. Suspension lifts don't really help on IFS unless you increase the bump stops....

Your main challenge will be the fire wall and body mount. The body mount can be chopped without too much effort.

285s are easy, 305s a bit more of a challenge, 315s a little harder, 35x12.5 even harder, Anything beyond that is pretty much impossible without major changes.

Much will depend on rim, tire, and alignment. Stock length control arms up front are pretty much limited to 305/315, 17x8.... still lots of tweaking required. 285s don't require any changes really. Maybe a little push of the liner.

why not try 285/75/17? There aren't a lot of tires in that size but they are out there. I run them without any problems

factoring everything in from added traction, mpg loss, acceleration and braking losses, on road drivability, noise, wear and tear and anything else I can think of I would stick with 285's. I had 305's and then 315's on my IFS tacoma with 4.88's. IFS components wear out too quickly and you get a lot more vibrations and annoyances when you start getting into a heavy 33 or 35. This is especially true if you're gonna be daily driving or putting a lot of miles on your rig. My tacoma was daily driven 20-25k a year. My new runner will see maybe 8-10k a year. 285's for me. Just my opinion/suggestion

So True. The driveability of my rig when i switched from the 285/70 duratracs at 54# to the 285/75 ridge grapplers at 66# is night and day.
