Maximum Length Shock for 906 Springs?

Hello all,

I'm a long time lurker, and just started posting recently when I started reading the same threads over and over and over.

I'm trying to piece together a 2" TRD/OME lift setup. I would like to stay at a level 2" for a moderately low CG, while trying to maximize the rear travel (both down AND up). I also don't want 265/75/16's to look tiny :)

What I'm thinking so far:
Front:TRD Tundra Springs
Bilstein 5100's at lowest perch
Rear: OME 906 Springs (with trim packer if necessary)
Shock?

I have seen many people use the stock LC shock and Tokico LC shock with the tall LC springs, but they are about 1.5" longer fully compressed (LC is 14.5" vs. 4Runner OME is 13" ). I don't want to limit the upward travel (move the bumpstops down), but I don't want to use the shocks as a stop.

Questions:

  • What is the longest fully compressed shock that we can run without the shock becoming the stop?
  • Will the 906's shorter length be an issue at full droop? Will they fall out?
  • I haven't heard about it much, but what about the Tundra 5100 rear? Stud mount top, 13.84" x 22.4" length and may be a good damping match for the front.

I apologize for posting yet another lift thread, but I have spent far too much time at work and home searching and haven't found the solution yet. Hopefully someone will have an easy answer and I can get these parts ordered!

I don't know what the longest shock you can use is, but I'm running stock shocks with my 906's, and they didn't fall out at full droop. Not sure if that helps you at all though.
 
Thanks IanB, but I'm trying to see if I can squeak out some extra droop if I'm going to change shocks anyway.

Many people have said OME goes well with OME, but would the 60028 comfort shocks be a good fit with the front Tundra 5100s? I don't plan on blasting full desert whoops, but I would like to hit speed bumps and trails with some speed without the rear bouncing...

From Cruiseroutfitters.com, I found that the free length of the 906 is 15.35", and the 890 is 17.13", so the 906 is about 2" shorter at full droop. Does anyone know how much shock travel is left at the top (in a stock shock) when the axle hits the stock location bumpstop?

These are the shocks that I have found so far that seem like reasonable options. All of these still use the stock upper stud mount. I'm not fully sold in the longevity of a eye mount at the top.

Stock 4Runner shock:
12.375" compressed and 19.375" extended
Travel: 7"

4Runner Bilstein HD (BE5-2451):
Compressed 322.5mm (12.7" )
Extended 513mm (20.2" )
Travel: 7.5"
179/79 rebound/compression
I've heard this is a very STIFF pairing with the 906 spring.

(I believe the 60027/60028 shocks have the same dimensions)
Compressed 329mm (12.95" )
Extended 539mm (21.2" )
Travel: 8.25"

Stock 1995 Toyota FZJ-80 Land Cruiser rear Tokico shock
1991-1997 FJ-80
Compressed: 14.5"
Extended: 23.5"
Travel: 9"

Tundra Bilstein 5100:
Compressed: 13.84"
Extended: 22.4"
Travel: 8.56"
I haven't found the damping on these yet.

compressed length of stock front shocks

I know this is old thread...but I still have questions.

anyone have any info for the front end compressed and extended lengths for stock, bilstein and OMEs?

Yes, I believe they are the Tockios for LCs, but could be mistaken. The stock 4Runner Tockios are just that, stock, so you wouldn't get as much travel. I run the 906s with OME 60028s and am prety happy with them. They are a little stiff, but not bad at all. My parents just sat in the back for a 200+ mile road trip and said they were pretty comfortable...stiffer than a car, but not bad.
 
I've run the 906's and OME shocks (not the comfort ones) for about 3 yrs
and they are way to stiff. About 90% of my driving is unloaded, but when
loaded the runner rides like a Caddy. I also run the billy 5100 taco's out front
on the second setting but just added a ARB bumper so a little low, and they
are also leaking so I need to decide what to do next.

I'll chuck in here

that im using the 906s with 4runner specific bil HDs. The rides kinda firm but not harsh.
 
I know this is super old but it comes up when I search for shock selection for OME 906. I just did an 880/906 setup with Bilstein 5100 front (lowest notch) and Tundra 5100 rears all from wheelers off road. It rides super nice compared to my 150k stock setup on my 01 that was nearly riding on the cones in the rear. Only issue is that at full droop in the rearend the springs fall out. 2in longer shocks are too long. I wish I could find some stock length 5100s.
 
lol ive got lx coils in the back with lc shocks. they ride stiff as hell with no rear plate bumper, but they are excellent on the rocks, they flex tremendously well, the springs will never fall out and there is absolutely no bouncing whatsoever. when i put those coils in i had to use a spring compressor. the only problem with them is the coils are so soft that when you load up the back, it drops down a lot, and then my headlights blind everyone. so thats one good thing about the ome coils is they hold weight better, and probably are more comfortable over the fast stuff. get some coil retainers.
 
Which LC shocks are you using? I ended up going with a SS 7.2 Kit (OME 890/5100) for the rear, but it feels way underdamped for how light I usually run. It is so floaty it is almost nauseating. Like riding on a rubber cloud.

I remember Sonoran Steel used to offer their 1.2a kit with the Tokico LC shocks instead of the 5100s that I have for a better road feel. I'm thinking the increased rebound of the LC shocks might be enough to counter the 890's without losing travel. If I remember right they were pretty cheap too.

Be careful. May have your spring pop out at full stuffing. Other then that great combo.
 
Even with the trip packers? I haven't had an issue with the 5100 and I was under the impression that they are similar extended length to the LC shocks.
 
If your springs are falling out why not just get limit straps? You don't want your shock limiting travel anyways.
 
Rear 906 coil slipped

This is an old thread but need some advise. On a recent trip my right rear 906 coil "slipped" out of the upper perch. I have 906 coils with Bilstein 5100 Tundra shocks. A mod from Wheeler's off road. Limit straps needed?
