Max capacity I believe is 18.5 gallons. But I've never filled above 17. Hell, I don't know if I've actually ever filled much above 16 before.

I've run out of gas before (pushing my luck on I-70 going across KS) and, counting the 2 gallons I poured into it on the side of the road as well as filling it up 2 miles later (lol, ALMOST MADE IT!) it was barely over 16 gallons. So color me skeptical on the 18.5 gallon capacity, regardless of what the specs say.
Normally, I'm around 220 miles these days, max. 33" tires, bumpers, skids, sliders, roof rack, winch, etc. It sucks gas down pretty well these days. Granted, I'm not bothering to correct for the odometer reading inaccuracy caused by the taller tires, it's actually going farther than that by some modest percentage.
And I added a second tank a couple of years ago - 15.5 gallons, more or less doubles the range if I go through both of them. Normally, I leave that second tank empty unless we're road tripping and I'll need the range. Handier than hauling gas cans on the roof like I used to.
PS: Our TDI Jetta wagon gets almost 50 mpg going 80 mph all day, and it has a gas tank sized for the thirsty VR6 version of the Jetta, plut I did a 'vent-ectomy' on it to remove the valve on the evap/filler neck tube (not needed for a diesel) so it fits in an extra gallon and a half or so (fuel gauge stays stuck on full for about 100 miles when you take the time and squeeze that last bit in). We've done a 750 mile tank before. It should be possible to get one over 800 miles, but it would have to involve a lot of 65 - 70 mph driving, and good grief, who's got the patience for that. Great road trip car, forget range anxiety, this can drive though multiple big western states without stopping.
