I have a '14 5th Gen and its time for a new rig. I was hoping the 2018 would have had some updates, now I am debating if I should pass on a '18 TRD Off Road and get a '18 Taco TRD Sport instead as its sporting all the new tech. Getting an '18 TRD Off Road would mean I will be rocking very old tech for the next 4-5 years. Thoughts?

If you don't need the interior space, I'd try and get a manual transmission Taco TRD Off Road. Also, maybe look at the Colorado ZR2, Chevy made a fantastic truck with that one.

Be sure to take as long of a test drive as possible in the Tacoma. Tacoma and 4Runner are NOT created equal in terms of available seating position and comfort. The tech is nice (I had a 2017 Tacoma TRD-offroad with tech) but isn't worth much if you aren't comfortable.

If I were looking at trucks, it would be almost impossible for me not to be considering the full size options, and very likely 100% ignoring Toyota.

Unless you need something smaller, I do not see the value.

In my opinion, the new F150 currently beats the Tacoma is every possible fashion.

I guess im weird in that unless this "tech" improves the reliability or offroad capability it isnt something i care about. I mean other than navigation and a touch screen with a camera what tech do you need that your phone doesnt already have?

Honestly if you want blind spot monitoring and that kinda stuff, maybe a slightly used GX460 might be a better buy for you?

What "tech" are you looking for? That can mean a lot of different things to different people.

This would be a major purchase for me. I'm a picky buyer and would have some sort of checklist for this.

"Technology" would likely be about #4 or 5 on that list.

Realistically though, if high-tech is really important, not sure you'll get that in either platform.

I had a 2016 Taco Off Road for about a year and that was all I could stand of it. I haven’t looked back since getting the 4R. Love the 4R, never loved the Taco, actually grew to despise it. The tech was nice but who cares if you hate driving the thing.

The auto is about the worst engine/trans combo I’ve ever driven. There never was enough room in the cab or the bed for such a long truck. I could barely fit a gym bag behind the front seat.

If I ever did a pickup again it would definitely be full size. For now, a SUV fits my lifestyle much better.

the new tacos engine/tranny combo driving experience sucks. The newer tech is nice but honestly who really uses it. We use our phones for GPS and QI charging is nice but not a deal breaker. Keep in mind the 4runner is still made in Japan vs Mexico/USA which means better build quality. If you can wait another year I bet 2019 will be a new model with the universal frame etc they are using on the camry (albeit reinforced). Yes the 4runner is super old and crap gas mileage but at least you can run over everything and not worry about it LOL!

I was on the same boat but decided with the runner. The main thing was that it felt super cramped and not that much space in the truck bed. Basically my son's car seat didn't fit in the back

Glad I'm not the only one who jumped ship from the new Tacoma into a 4runner, not the easiest pilll to swallow.. selling a vehicle right after you buy it.

Tacoma may be newer tech but it wasn't a great overall experience to me for all the same reasons listed above, had the manual trans. Not sure what to say, there's a lot of other criteria that goes into my purchases other than technology so you gotta make that call. Spend some critical seat time in the Tacoma before making any commitments.

Another person here that went from Tacoma to 4Runner. A few weeks before I bought it though one of my best friends since birth bought a new Colorado ZR2 and we went wheeling in it bone stock and it seriously had me considering staying with Toyota or not.

For me, the roominess and comfort of the 4Runner was what ultimately sold me on it. I don't regret my purchase whatsoever but definitely check out all options 1st. If the space and comfort isn't a high priority I may have went the ZR2 route. It's a helluva truck and comes in a diesel if that's your sort of thing.

My .02

By the time you bring the new vehicle home the tech will change or most likely be outdated. The selling point on my previous vehicles was tech and I bought it hook, line and sinker. 17 months later I realized what a waste it all was and here we are today. As another poster mentioned there isnt much the car can do that will be better than a cell phone. Blind spot monitoring or parking sensors are nice, I do miss that, but not a the cost of losing comfort or flexibility in the vehicle or how you use it.

I guess in the end you need to decide what exactly you are after.

I do not understand why the op needs to replace his 2014 with a new 4runner.
I have a 2014 and plan to run it another 9-10 years like my last 4runner.

If you want to upgrade some aspect of tech, you could always get a new headunit with apple car play. One of the perks of the 4Runner is the simplicity of it allows for easier customization.

One thing to consider:

Toyota issued a FULL halt on aftermarket accessories, both 3rd party and OEM, on anything 2018 (might be 2017 too) in the Toyota trucks line up (Anything with safety sense). The "tech" you are hoping to get comes with a price. The safety sense technology has lit up the christmas tree in the cluster and placed vehicle in limp mode due to modifications to suspension, braking and a myriad of other tweaks we all like to do. I found this out at the dealer the other day when I was inquiring about the 2018 Tundra we are going to add to our family.... I cannot remember if they states it was on the Tacoma as well, but he did say all trucks and anything with safety sense... May not be relevant to the Tacoma you are looking for though.

I also came over from a ‘16 taco turd. Go check out Tacomaworld and read about the dissatisfaction of the auto, rear diff howl, cam position issues, etc, etc.... If you go that route take it for the weekend and buy a manual. Make sure you love it, but my bet is if you get one you’ll be back here in a year with a lighter wallet.
