Measuring lift amount?

Hey all,


So here's the low down. I've got Bilstein 5100s @ the 2.5" notch, and FJ coils that had an unknown amount of mileage on them when I installed them. I'm starting to think they might have already been tired and sagging when I got them. I really don't think I got anything close to 3" of lift.

I also have a 1" body lift installed. It just doesn't look like 4" of total lift... Currently sitting on 275/70r17s and looking to go to 35s eventually. Might have to get some new springs!

Don't discount the weight of your winch mount and winch up front as well, that can sag the front end an inch.

Did you have any questions? Didn't see any in your post.

Did you do any wheel well measurements pre/post lift (center of hub to fender)? Those would let you compare your lift against others on the forum pretty easily.

I measured before and after the winch, and I only lost less than half an inch.

Yes, my question is in the post title. To clarify, is there a way to determine how much lift I have without having prelift measurements?

I have wheel center to fender measurements for my stock '06 Sport V8. I'll post them when I get home tonight. That'll give you one data point. I want to say it's about 19.5", but I'll double check.

My memory was correct (amazing!). 19.5" it is. Mileage is 133,000.

FWIW, rear wheel center to fender is 21.5"

Well, I measured...

22" in the front. That's really low!

Sounds like you got 2.5". If you were shooting for 3" and then added a winch and bumper I'd say you are about where you should expect.

Plus the 1 inch body lift though. So somehow I only have 1.5 inch of suspension lift. Maybe 2 inch without the winch.


I sure do have a lot of travel through, which is nice!

Another thing you need to consider is that the fender opening geometry is different between 03-05, and 06-09 model years. I believe the opening is slightly larger on later years (06+). So RonJR's measurements may not apply directly to your rig.

Also, you can't make the assumption that your travel envelope is determined by the amount of tire-to-wheel well clearance that you have. Odds are your lower control arm will bottom out on the bump stop before your tire reaches "full stuff" into that fender.

Ahhh, interesting! I'm just gonna have to measure a stock 04 then.

Yeah, the tape mwasure was there just because. I realize that number is irrelevant. And you're right, my bump stops on my LCA stop it much before full stuff.

If it helps, I have an 03 V8 and my front is at 21" with 5100s set at 1.75" on stock springs.

One more data point. Just measured my daughter's '04 SR5, 220,000 miles. Measured 18 and 3/8 from wheel center to fender, so about 1" less than my '06. Definitely a different shaped fender opening. I'm sure the springs are original, so likely some sagging has occurred.
