I installed an aftermarket radio with the Metra dash surround and couldn't stand the voided space on each side. So, I bought some dash magnets, glued them up behind the surround and boom, I've got a concealed magnetic phone holder for $6.
Jostled it around a bit and with two of those flat magnets in my iPhone case, it holds up really nice. Not sure how it will hold off mudding, but seems to be good so far.
