MF cat conv

Hey all,
Anyone here have an experience with a Magnaflow Cat? I fear i might have to get one soon. It might be more preventative than anything. I threw the code then it cleared. From what I'm told a Sensor will either work- or it wont. So I'm leaning toward the CC.
Thanks.

I have a federal 2000 with a custom magnaflow cat. been perfect, no codes.

by custom I mean it was just a generic magnaflow with custom in and out made by local exhaust shop. so not pre-fab magnaflow.

magnaflow good stuff have had good luck with their products.

Did you get a code or just see the check engine come on then go away? Ive been getting p0420 on the 4runner and my prius for years I just turn off with the scan gauge lol.

I put one on about 2 years ago after I went through all the low hanging fruit options for fixing the P code for Oxygen sensor.
No recurrence of that code and it makes the stock exhaust sound a bit deeper at idle, but nothing obnoxious.

I’m about to cross this bridge also. I think the previous owner murdered the cat by going way too long on spark plug service. The maga flow Cali converter is 800$. The Toyota one is 2k$……lol.

I have some brand new sensors to roll into it, but I doubt that’ll fix it. The converter isn’t heating up anything from the looks of it when I shot my 20 year old raytek IR at it. Already did the pressure test and fixed the two small leaks. It’s dead Jim…..

My wife thinks I need to just do the tape trick. Which I certainly could, but I think I may actually just fix it to make her complete. This 4Runner has a smiles per mile factor as I go bombing though the desert like nothing else has ever given me.

That honestly is probably about the worst issue with older used gasoline vehicles. No one services the spark plugs correctly and they end up killing the catalyst as a result. My old Subaru computer had the same issue. The spark plugs were so worn out they had a hilariously large gap to them.

Gang,
It's always to good to post up issues with out trucks. I can almost always count on someone saying" yeah i have to go through this too" or "I will be going through that shortly" Makes me feel like I'm not alone in this.

Mind if i borrow this..? Just reinforces the point on why i love this dusty ass Money pit.

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad the code didn't come back..

I'm having the MF "overland" Cat Back installed Wed. I am replacing the TRD that i had put on shortly after i took her off the lot. I was going with the Borla then i heard about the MF with the resonator.- which i will have no part of. I'm excited.

I am sorry about all of the multiple messages.
Yes, The CEL came on and when i read it came up as "P0420"
I drove around like that for a week or so and then one day i noticed it went away.. Hauled ass to my nearest NYS inspection place- it passed. then i had to figure out what to do next.

Turn it off with the scan gauge? I don't know of such sorcery. I guess you don't have State inspections?

The Plugs and wires are my next Adventure. What plugs/wires do you use? just what Yota suggests or are there higher performance plugs/wires out there? What they cost i can't imagine higher performance parts being that much more expensive. Switching back to the CC issue I did see on the MF site that there are a few different CC'S on offer. You Cali guys get the shaft when it comes to your truck and all that emission chit($2k for an CC?). We have stupid NYS inspection- which can be equally troubling.

I used magnaflow cats on two of my cars, no problem with them and last long. There is one I installed in 2006 on a car a sold to a friend, still installed and no code.

Thanks for the reply. I would use OEM only but $2k USD is a lot of money for a CC.
As long as i don't throw any codes I'm good with it.

I'll chime in just in case it helps someone. I installed the MF Overland kit (super simple - an idiot like me can nearly do it correctly). I have the 2 stock Cali cats. I was experimenting with the 3 possible resonator options and threw a 0420 "Cat Failing" code. I would clear the code and it would return within 10 minutes of driving. The problem was my hasty under-tightening of the pipe clamps resulting in an exhaust leak somewhere beyond the second 02 sensor that was detected. I remember loosening up the end section to see if I could make the system 1/2" longer to ride a little better on the final rubber isolator/hanger thing (name escapes me). Torqued all the clamps (before and after the muffler) down and never saw the code again. No sensors replaced, not cats replaced, no-cost happiness.

I also run a Magnaflow cat. I had it smogged last year and had the lowest emissions tailpipe test I've ever had with any vehicle. Highly recommend. Since you are in NY state, you have the same strict ceramic-only requirements that I do. It's a great product and like you said, about $1700 cheaper than OEM!

Installed a high-flow MF cat (forgot the model #) back in 2014 when my original one was stolen. Weld-on that a local shop did. Make sure to have them install a flange so it can be bolted to the muffler. I totally goofed and didn't tell them, and the tech welded it straight to the muffler. Anyways, has been working fine since with no CEL. Planning to go with it also on my newly acquired '02 which had its cat stolen as well!

Perfect, feel exactly the same about my 02 4TR, though no desert driving in the northeast. Not sure exactly what it is about it, aside from the fact it’s made of granite and has me rethinking “is this maybe a Lexus”.
Yeah, treat her with whatever she needs and you will be rewarded.

NGK for both. NGK is a Japanese company that specializes in both. Toyota OE plugs are Denso, and they usually cost more or are the same price. I always check eBay as well once I have the part numbers because a lot of times people buy parts that they end up not using and then have to sell at a loss, and I've personally done exactly that.

I recently had a Walker 53287 cat installed. No CEL but wouldn't pass state emissions testing because of Cat not ready status. Shop that did it said the old cat was indeed bad, but no CEL.

Thanks Guys!
So far so good. I had my MF Cat back installed today(welding needed to be done damn rust belt) so far no codes. I have less than 100 mi on it so if there are going to be any codes they should show up shortly. I might not need a new CC..I am prepared if i need to.

As for the "Noise" it's not really noisy at all! I was prepared for a loud grumble but what i got was a "slightly louder noise than my TRD exhaust"

I decided not to use the resonator Just the cap on the Muffler. I am very happy with the system.

I have heard about the walker systems all of what i heard was good. Thanks for the info on the plugs and wires.(Can you pass on the part numbers for both)? That's next on the "to do list" probably next week.
I asked about plugs i was quoted about $8 per plug does that sound right?

I want to say I put in denso plugs? There’s two options that Toyota lists. I know I installed the dual electrode ones…..platium also I think….hell I can’t remember. Wires were from NAPA.

Waste spark systems tend to be hard on wires and plugs. I was surprised how reasonable the Toyota set of wires were and I’ll for sure go that way next time. Even includes the clips and twists in the right spots.
