Michelin LTXA/T2 Tires. Comments?

I've read quite a few tire threads on this site but did not see much mention of Michelin LTXA/T2 tires. I asked my long-time tire dealer to recommend a tire for occassional off road driving that would not generate an increased level of road noise as I also take a number of long road trips. The Michelin LTXA/T2 is what he recommended.

Does anyone have any experience or comments about this tire?

I will be sure to look at the Bridgestone Revos, too.

I have a 2006 Limited 4WD V8 with 18" wheels.

I talked to a local tire dealer also. They said they have no complaints and said they are excellent off road , but they also said in true life compared to what Michelin says there is not enough tires he sold to make a proper judgement.

The tread looks pretty interesting , I'm not sure Michelin has been a real player in the AT market before. I may be wrong.

Previous Michelin A/T did have a strong reputation as a workhorse among the country folks (farmers, construction, etc.). However, it never was a big hit among the off-roaders. My guess was that it did not have a lot of flash...it was a plain looking tire. I had the previous Michelin A/T on my '02 4runner for a while...it was a good tire.

The new A/T-2 seems like an impressive tire for the occasional off-roader who wants a quiet comfy ride with not much penalty to fuel economy. I may try this tire in the future because my off-roading days are slimming down (due to work and family).

Unless your H/T-S are wearing down or malfunctioning, i would just keep what you have now. You will probably NOT notice much of an improvement on-road, if at all. The H/T-S is a very good tire, an excellent tire for the price even! You will pay a high price for questionable improvements.

The A/T-2 is probably a slightly better tire than H/T-S off-road, but not much and certainly not enough for you to spend big $$$$$ for it.

If you are concerned about off-roading and you're itching to spend $$$, then i would go for something more aggressive and significantly better off-road than your H/T-S. I would recommend BFG AT KO or Goodyear Wrangler SilentArmor. Again, this is ONLY if you really want to off-road more often or scared about tire puncture off-road.

BTW, my advice is the same if you want to go for REVOs. Stick with what you have.

Thai, thanks for the valuable advice. My H/T-S tires have a few more miles but not many. I bought this vehilce with 65,000 miles on it and it's got 75,000 now.

The current tires are fine but I thought I would buy something with a slightly more agressive tread. Any further advice will be appreciated.

I had the older tread design of this model on my old Z71 Chevy . It was an awesome tire . Decent mileage and great for off road . They seemed to have radically re-designed the tread .
 
I'm slated to purchase these tires form Costco in the following week. Now thru 12 October they have an $80 discount for 4 tires and free pair of their new Michelin Symphony wiper blades (about $40).
 
The Revo is not a bad choice and prefer over the Michelin's I have on my Tahoe which are LTX.

Can't really go wrong with any mentioned , Revo included . They all have good points and bad . The GY Silent Armor is one I really wanted to try , but didn't work out that way. The Mich AT2 is a pretty aggressive shoulder to it.

My REVO's (on my 2nd set) have been a good tire . Handled alot off road driving , never punctured them or had a flat , good in some snow conditions and not so good in others , good on some trails , not so on others . My gas milage was great and noise was never a factor until they were at the end , but the rain/wet traction was still decent. I really wanted to try something else for the heck of it , but ran out of time and just had to do something quick so I went with what I had. They always got me back home.

Every tire works different for everyone's individual needs.
 
Hello. New member here...

I recently purchased the LTX AT-2's for my 07 Runner from Discount. I love the tire and have already done a little minor off roading with ease. I feel they are extremely quiet on road. Only problem so far is I can't get rid of a slight shimmy in the steering wheel at about 63 mph. It does not do it all the time at that speed though...tends to come and go so I'm thinking it may be the road. I had them rebalanced today as a procaution with no improvement. The tech said that they were all out of balance before he rebalanced them. I'm thinking I should take them to another Discount to have the balancing checked again. I hate to be a pain but after spending $752 for these, I feel that the ride should be consistantly smooth. Any other ideas ?

Make sure the Discount Tire Store has the "RoadForce" balance machine. If that still does not work, then try the local Toyota dealer.
 
Hi all, 1st post and really want to understand something.

Yesterday I bought an '03 V8 4x4 Limited and immediately took it to have these tires put on. I went with 265/70/17 but have since read of some folks having rubbing problems.

The tires look/feel great and I love the way the 270's fill the wheel well but am I running any risks w/ this setup?

FYI when I have a little free cash, 1st two mods are to balance out front end (either w/ FJ front springs or a 2/1 lift) and some sort of side exhaust mod because one of my favorite things about a T4R is the rolldown rear window. I've already experienced the "whoa-who-farted?" smell under strong acceleration and want to rectify that ASAP.

Hope to get some pics up soon, glad to have found such an active and passionate community to discuss/learn about these awesome vehicles.

Welcome and you're running no 'risk' with 265/70/17's. The only reported rubbing comes with the BFG A/T. The rubbing can occur two places, the plastic at the bottom front fender liner and with the BFG's the UCA (upper conrol arm) with a fully cut steering wheel. There's something about the squareness of the BFG's profile and the way BFG sizes tires. There's a member here who put on 275/70/17 Goodyear Silent Armours with no issues (maybe he had a little plastic rub, I forget).

What tires did you get, the Michelin AT2's?

Off topic but... BTW, I'm one who has FJ springs. If you read my posts expect a little less 'cause you have the V8 and your factory srings are the same rate as the OEM V6 springs but 5mm taller. When the time comes PM and I can give you more gouge. Link in my signature will get you started on the FJ spring thing.

I liked the Revo a lot and got nearly 80K miles out of them but the AT2's are much quieter and provide a better ride. I've only tested them in light mud\dirt and they provide better traction then the Revo.

My only complaint is that they pick up everything. They're also not as stiff on the sidewalls so they're not as stable in high speed cornering as the Revo. All in all, I'm happy and I think they're going to be a great tire.

Yup, goes along with what i have said about them...almost to the dot! :)
 
Glad you like them , looking forward a long term review.

The sidewall strength concerned me a little , they seemed a little spongy to me and the dealer when I looked at them, which will make them ride nicer then the Revo.

Neither here nor there I think you made a good choice with them. I've heard through the grapevine the traction off road is supposed to be good .
 
So I put about 1,000 highway miles on these tires a week ago and have to say I am very impressed with the ride quality and overall performance for a tire that is still capable off-road. I detected almost no road noise at speeds up to 85 and overall my T4R was actually quieter than our 2000 Lexus RX 300.

I don't have a very informed view as I just bought the T4R and haven't tried anything else but these have been everything I wanted so far. Now I just need to get off pavement and see how they perform there.
