Mid-Travel - ACTUAL numbers..?

So I'm trying to maximize my front travel (paying attention to up-travel) on my stock + SPC upper setup, and I've gone with Fox 880-02-409 to do so - but I'm still measuring..

If you've actually measured; what are you mid-travel guys getting, and what's your setup?

King extended travel coilovers with 600lb springs, SPC upper arms, plastics guy bumps, 10 inch limit straps, and whiteline lower bushings. I get 10.5 inches of total travel with the straps on. A hair over 11 with them off. Personally I wouldn't try to gain up travel because it just makes fitting larger tires exponentially more difficult.

Are there part numbers on your Kings? Do you know the total stroke and the collapsed and extended lengths?

10"? Do you have long travel upper and lower control arms?

25001-151R is the king part number. I can't find the actual travel specs on the coilover but its somewhere in the neighboorhood of a 6-inch stroke. Ill see if I can find the exact specs.

No, stock lower control arms and SPC upper arms

For those reading that haven't measured a stock setup (I know you have, eimkeith), here's what I got with all stock arms, stock bumpstops and all pivots loose, measured center of hub to fender lip:

Full compression (truck weight on bumpstops): 16.75"
Full extension (stopped by upper ball joint): 25.25"

So stock suspension travel up front is 8.5" if you can use all the down travel (stock shocks limit it to around 8").

I used small top plate spacers as part of my lift to maximize down travel to just below what the stock upper ball joints could handle, and I did verify that the 5100's had a tiny bit of up travel left so they won't bottom out.

How much extra down travel can the CV's take?

Very little to none.

Remember when I rolled my diff? It effectively gave the passenger side CV an extra inch of droop. I can tell you that caused me to break 3 CV's in less then 25 miles. I've since put on limit straps to limit droop to prevent that from binding the CV's ever again. With a front locker sacrificing 1/2" of droop has not affected my wheeling at all so far.

well, that would seem to end the 'benefit of the diff drop' debate..

Too bad there is no solution for dropping the rear mount on the diff. Moving the front mounts down 1" doesn't do much at the CVs due to the long lever arm on the front diff mounts.

Not sure what the difference between 25001-151 and the 25001-151R is, but when I emailed King a couple years ago about the 25001-151's, they sent me this:

Part #25001-151
4 Runner 1996-2002 Front Internal Reservoir Coilovers Compressed - 15.342 Extended - 19.455 Spring Rate - 600lb

That's only 4.113" travel

we definitely need data!

25001-151R is the Filthy Motorsports part number, the actual King number is the number you mentioned, 25001-151.

King had the compressed and extended lengths for the OEM shocks on their site but now they are gone. That number sounds about right with the EXT versions being around the 5.0" travel number.

Sorry been super busy this week. I have to swap two diffs on my buddy's fj tomorrow and I'll grab some data after that

Don't forget me!

Incidentally, I went with Fox 880-02-409 coilovers for the Tacoma; they have a collapsed length of 14.55, extended length of 20.040, and 5.490" stroke. I chose those because their collapsed length was getting closer to the 5100s which allow a lot of uptravel.

Because they are Tacoma specific, I have to put the Taco bolt pattern in the strut towers to mount them - so I went a head and made a run of strut tower reinforcement plates with both the 4Runner and Taco patterns on them for easy locating and drilling.

At the moment, I'm trimming the bucket on the tower to allow free range of steering movement when fully compressed (the TC spindle gusset hits the tower when you upward like that), then I'll see what additional trimming I have to do for tire clearance. At full bump on the factory bumpstops, I only had to take a sliver of pinch weld off at the bottom to clear my 285/70/17s, on account of my 1" BL; so I'm optimistic the additional trimming will be minimal and the uptravel gains will be realistic.

Are the Taco top mounts on a different BCD, or is it just clocked?

I always got the impression that any front coil bucket weakness would be best solved with something like the Total Chaos coil bucket gussets:

Charlie, they're clocked. I can't tell from those photos, but are those TC gussets bolted on?

I think tower cracking is best addressed with both a gusset plate up top (I'm a weld it in guy) and a limit strap below, IMO.

No personal experience here, but the cracks in the towers I remember seeing have been on the sides. The TC gussets are weld on and around $100. Wasn't talking about the shock hoops that was also in that link I posted.

I should have looked closer at the pics you just posted - you already have something welded on there that does the same thing!

Ah - those ARE TC gussets that I have welded on - but they're to reinforce the upper A-arm bolt, by making it double-shear. I recommend them!

They don't address crack propagation from the strut top-plate bolt holes in the tower, though. Maybe AssBurns or one of those guys who've had the cracking can post up some photos?
