Might sound like a silly question, but

I was wondering if it was possible to put a 3.0 into a 1985 chassis?I I'm asking because I have one with only 3600 miles on it. I realize that all the wiring and everything is different, but wondering if the motor mounts on the frame are in the same place or would it need to have new mounts welded in?
Or any other mods needed to put that motor in?

The body on the 85 is mostly trashed, no motor or transmission. Rough interior, etc. But, it's priced reasnobale.

My 89 that I wrecked has salvageable body, but the frame is bent. So, was thinking it may be possible to swap my body over to the 85 frame and use the few parts I need from it to fix my body.

I dont think it should be a problem. The first gen 4runners came with the 3.0. So wiring harness and so on and so on you are going to need to swap over so should be fine.

Ack why would you intentionally put a 3.slo into something

fixed it.

Why is it that everyone gives the 3.0 such a bad rap? I love mine it's very reliable i can beat the shit out of it and it keeps on ticking. I can get up to 70 mph with 35's no problem sure its sluggish but so it anything with 125hp stock gears and 35's. It has more power than a 22re. My guess is a 3.4 is probably a punched out 3.0 with dohc's. All the 3.4 has on it is dual cams and what 40-50hp. Sure thats a good chunk but thats not enough of a reason to totally hate an engine. So can someone give me a real reason why everyone hates this engine or did i just end up with a good one?

The engine gets a bad rep because...... it is prone to blowing headgaskets and its slow. Now not all of them blow one, but the majority do, I personally have had one that the hg went on me. It's still a Toyota engine, but its not Toyota's best.

mostly because they are crap. underpowered, prone to bad HG's, and not great fuel economy. they only have the slightest bit more power than the 22re, and aren't nearly as dependable.

Yea what he said. The power curve is also stupid. I have the 5-speed, and I can wring out some more power if I crank that sucker up to 4000 rpms at a dead stop, but it makes so sense. It's slow up to 3500 rpms, and then picks up SUPER fast from 3500-4000, but then I have to shift and 2nd gear is like super slow after that. And then third is fast again. And then 4th is slow. And then so is 5th. It's just weak, not the most reliable, and doesn't have the greatest mpgs. The 3.4 is better on all of those fronts but I personally like the 2nd Gen body better.

The 3 blow gets a bad rap and is considered the worst toyota engine ever because of the wonky yamaha heads that are very inefficient and tend to produce heat, not to mention the exhaust crossover that causes excessive heat and is the major cause of many a blown head gasket. A valve train that is a pain to work on and adjust. Even the bottom ends aren't that strong in them. It is also the only SOHC V6 toyota ever had. Yes I have seen them last for 300k miles, but most of those were old guy driven and very well taken care. As my Toyota master tech buddy says "As long as you rebuild the head every 100-150k miles and take great care of it and pray the bottom end lasts, they'll live a while".

Why?????

Because I have a fully rebuilt 3.0 ( including the heads, block, crank, every sensor, fuel injectors, power steering pump, alternator, starter, pullys, belts, hoses, etc.) With only 3600 miles on it!!!!!!!
& I have everything for the 7MGE swap. :)

So basically mine is an exception to the rule? HG problem can be fixed with headers or heat wrap and a heat shield. My 3.0 doesn't feel much different than my buddies 3.4. Don't think im saying that all of you are wrong or anything thats not what im getting at. Im just trying to see why there are so many 3.0 haters and i dont have a bad thing to say about mine. It leaks oil like a sob but it also has 250000 so it can be expected. Mine must just be a beast Long live my 2nd gen lol:guitar2:

I thought about headers but they cost as much as I payed for the vehicle. Cheaper to swap in a 3.4 basically.

when i researched that it was like a $3000 swap around here. For that money i can build and install a 350hp sbc. I think im really leaning towards the 4.3 vortec since now i have a wiring guy :bounce:

yes, and they do exist. but I believe they are far outnumbered.

my biggest issue with that engine is the power output. they are turds.

I've seen some engines around 600-900 dollars.. and then I know a guy who would put it in for about $500. Seeing as headers are like $850 for like a 20 HP difference..

really they all kind of are 22re 3.0 and 3.4. Sure as you go up they get better. Either way in my opinion they all are under powered. I think im going to do a chevy swap. The 3.4 is way to expensive for such a little power up grade. Also where are you located in WA?

Around here you are lucky to find one for 900. I can do the install but i cant wire it. Usually the engine is around 1200 with the harness and computer. there was something else that cost money i can't remember. And its hard to find a 5 speed 3.4 computer and harness.

Its not too uncommon out here but headers would probably be 100 times easier to put in.
