Mikey's Build Thread...

Is this bumper going to be available to the rest of us 5th gen'rs or is this going to be a one off? I really need to get my spare out from under as it sits almost as low as the diff.

As far as I know it will be a one off, as far as I know. I did not ask if there would be a jig made to build more, usually he needs your truck, or one of the same, there to build it.

If you want one and can do with out your truck for a while, he will build one for you. But seeing you are on the other side of the country that would be difficult. Maybe when the bumper makes its debut a fellow local 5th Genner (I know Ride is patiently waiting to see it) will bring their truck up there and be able to build one on his and ship it.

I know one guy had three bumpers built off of his 4th Gen so his truck was with Luke for a while.

That's the way a rear bumper should be done! The main reason that aft crossmember on the frame was located back so far is to allow room for the spare tire up underneath.
That crossmember has got to go or in my thinking just be relocated forward up next to the aft body mounts to gain precious departure angle.

Plating over that thing like most of these other bumpers doesn't gain anything in the way of departure angle. That plastic bumper cover we have now just pushes up and hits the steel crossmember when going up a steep incline now so plating over it will actually lose departure angle.

I'm going to try and work with local fab guru,Justin at Rocktek to have one custom designed for my truck this winter. If not ,I'll be headed back to Ca. next summer to have Luke build one for me!!:driving: Love the way he angles that up back there to gain even more.

I'ma hafta nerd out on this one and point out that I gained almost 5 degrees of departure by "plating" the existing rear cross member. The two biggest things that kill our departure angle in stock form are A. The spare tire (looks like our trucks have a saggy diaper in the back) B. The tow hitch. For those who don't two, this is easy to remove but unless you also take your spare out from underneath your not gaining anything. The Trail Edition has about 2 inches of foam and two coverings on top of the rear crossmember, further sacrificing the departure angle.

If they do end up chopping the rear up I am veeeeery anxious to see their design, it looks like these guys have great style AND great functionality.

Mike: I think I asked you before, but is the bumper going to be bolted on and removable or permanently welded to the frame?

Its gonna be a long couple months while we all wait, you gotta be getting impatient already :hungry:

Heres a couple pics i scribbled up with my trusty crayon showing the departure angle differences. They are not accurate or at the right angle I know, but they illustrate the point -

OEM departure angle is in yellow (to the bottom of the tow hitch), the horizontal blue line represents the bottom of the frame rail, the vertical blue line represents the end of the rear crossmember. From what I could tell from my build you have about 2" of the rear crossmember sticking past the rear hatch, cutting that out and gaining that 2" would be huge. It would reaaaalllly improve the departure angle, something this truck desperately needs.

It will be bolted on in numerous locations. If it begins to rattle, which I doubt it will, I will have it welded on.

I did ask Luke if he could send me photos of the progress to keep me satisfied. As I get those I will post them up.

And in the video that is posted a few post back its funny because I land square on the spare tire and hitch while entering into the frame twister.
 
Luke will be saving the CAD designs and sounds like he will be building a second set of pieces off of my truck. So he could more easily reproduce the future bumpers.
 
Forgive what may seem like a dumb question, but whats the difference between CB and HAM? Doesn't the ham take up a lot more room in the rig?


Can't wait to see this bumper finished!! I can only imagine how pumped you are to get your truck back.
 
HAM you have more frequencies of different wavelengths available which are more powerful and can travel greater distances. Clarity is much much greater. Granted there are more pros then I know since I am new to the world.

As far as taking more room up. Maybe. The brain of the rig I want is much bigger then the brain of the Cobra 75. But I will hide the brain under the passenger seat with the face plate mounted above the 4x4 lever.
