Mikey's Build Thread...

Ok so an issue has come up. I was taking the rear suspension off and saw my rear lower link lost the bolt and was only bolted through one side. The hole looks like it got ovalized a bit.

(Pictures to be placed here.)

This might be the reason for my wallowing all the sudden!!!!!

Ordered a new bolt and going to see if that solves my problem and go from there. I am keeping my fingers crossed that my problem is solved by about $2 in parts.
I am also having a hard time getting the Johnny joint to center too.

And now the next step. Got the alignment done, and the Duratracs and XD wheels put on. Super Happy with the outcome. Now just need to get some sliders, and bumpers once someone finishes them.

Had to do a little trimming but no biggie. Tires sit just a touch out side of the fenders, but the tread is flush. Tires are quite on road, can't wait to get it off road.
How many inches is that lift?

Lately my truck has been developing so nasty noises. I have been trying to remedy them.

One issue...front passenger wheel bearing on its way out. Got a very obvious grind and growl at slow speeds. I have recently ordered two new complete hubs off one of the guys over at Tacoma World. Should be a pretty simple swap over. Going to put both on at the same time so they have the same mileage. Nice thing about the guy I bought them from is he gives you a one year 12000 mile warranty too. Not bad.

Second issue....got a good pop sound upon accelerating and sometimes turning. I have determined I have bushings up front that have gone bad. I have sitting in the garage a new set of SPC bushings waiting to go on. While I have everything off I might replace the lower control arm bushings as well just to be on the safe side.

Also figure while I have the front end all apart I might as well send t coilovers in to get an upgrade/rebuild done. The rears will follow down the road. Both will get Radflo's remote resis with compression adjuster. Should sweeten the ride.

Also waiting to go in is my rock lights. Got a bunch of bright LED strips that should work great.

So a question for all. The lower UCA bushings. Should I get a stock replacement or go with Whiteline bushings? White line seems to be a bit cheaper. Does anyone have experience with them on a Runner?

Thanks all

So today was step one with eliminating noises. Today I tackled my front passenger wheel bearing to hopefully eliminate some grinding I had.

First step was to jack the truck up and put it on jack stands...

Take the front wheel off obviously...

Now the service guys forgot to put the black dust cap back on as you can see so add taking that off right here.

Next take the cotter pin out and I discarded it...

Then the blue crown nut retainer thingy...

Then I had my girlfriend step on the brakes so I can loosen the axle nut (35 mm)

Then it was time to get the caliper out of the way. First thing I did was take the retaining clip of the spindle. (12mm)
photo.jpg

The the two 17mm bolts behind the caliper, which were a bit of a pain. But thanks to a breaker bar, quick work was done. Then I hung them out of the way with some zip ties I had lying around.

Next take the disc off, mine stuck a bit so I put the retainer clip bolt in the hole and popped it right off.

Next up are the 17mm bolts holding the hub on. Mine actually came off pretty easy. Then a little wiggling to get the hub off.

And the hub is now off. Everything looked good inside and the seal on the CV still looked good so I did not replace it.

The new hub (old one was all rusty)

Installing is pretty much the reverse. For the 17mm bolts holding the hub on I torqued them fairly tight but did not force it. Put the disc back on and replace the caliper. Remember to put the brake line retainer clip back on the spindle. Most important to remember is to torque the axle nut to 173 lb-ft. Replace the crown nut holder thingy, then a new cotter pin.

All went pretty smooth until I got to the darn grease cap. What a pain to get on. But at last it finally gave and all was buttoned up.

Fairly easy install if you ask me. If I was not taking pictures and drinking my delicious coffee I would probably be able to do one side in about 45 minutes. For now only did my passenger side, which did help eliminate some grinding but not all. Seems like it has something to do with my brakes.

Next week I am going to replace the bushing in my UCAs and torque everything down in the back.

Wish me luck.

What did you decide to do on the LCA bushings?

Haven't got to those yet. Going to do the UCAs probably Monday and see what sounds I get afterwards. Leaning towards factory bushings if I need to replace. But for ease of replacement and future services the Total Chaos lower arms are tempting. Plus the added strength and the ability to add a bypass later is nice.

I wish your shop was closer so I could bring my truck to you and help diagnose this grinding I have.

My concern with the LCA bushings would be the labor involved. You'll probably have to burn them out. It stinks to holy hell and is a crap job in general.

You're about as far away from High Tech as possible. But if you drive up to Vancouver, I'd be happy to help, free of charge! I'll be doing my UCAs next week also.

You running the Light Racing UCAs?

Yes. I thought I could get away with the original rubber bushings with my "modified" washers for awhile. Turns out, I could get 35k miles. So I've got the all new updated arms that have the dimpled bushings and longer sleeve. My left ball joint was starting to have some play anyway.

Ball joints.....I should probably check those too if the popping doesn't go away.

Today I tried to replace the bushings in my Light Racing UCAs. Boy not an easy task. I only got part of one bushing out, and it took ALL DAY. I also think i cut the sleeve too deep, damaging the actual UCA. So, it is time to upgrade, and ICONs are on order.

Now I am dreading if I need to do the lower control arm bushings.

Happy Holidays all!

There's always TC LCAs, just saying :naughty:

I had a tough time getting my bushings out also. I spent two hours on the first one with a hacksaw as I was nervous I would cut the UCA. On the next three I used a real sharp razor to cut off the narrower of the two ends and they just slid out. The last three took 30min total.

Narrower of the two ends? How did you get them to slide out? Got pictures of the swap? I think I have the older style, meaning older then what you had, of bushing. Mine are not budging at all. The pesky metal sleeve that the bushings are fuzed to wont budge. I even went to two shops to see if they could just press them out and both said they probably would have to cut them out.

The ICONs will definitely be easier to service.

Ok I know I have been a ghost lately but it is because I have been waiting on parts and the rig is on jack stands in the driveway.

I finally got the shipping notice for my ICON Billet UCAs yesterday and they are scheduled to appear on the doorstep on Tuesday. Thank God because I miss driving my truck (the girl is sick of my FRS's bumpy ride).

Also got my Blue Sea fuse box and breaker and all the goodies to re do all of my wiring. I will also be wiring up the rock lights finally. Found out one of my switches burned out so a replacement is on order.

Pics to come once parts arrive!

Pissed because I missed an awesome looking DV trip.

made my own mount ala many people on this forum...

I separated the relays and fuse box to make it fit. I know it is not pretty but once it is in the truck I won't even be able to tell.

Now for some time with my soldering iron.
